Maybe you should read where I said $1k plus.

you might do it for that price if you get lucky to find a used rear end or if you have time to wait......it took me almost a year to find the 8.2"......I could have found a 12 bolt sooner but anything that is in good shape was over $1,500 and then I'd have to hope that it had the gearing I wanted. The there is the cost of shortening the driveshaft and the conversion control arms so that would have easily put me $2,000 +. If I was going to go with a 12 bolt I would have gone with a 9" that was made to fit a G body.....which would be $2,000+. I'm just glad when I found the 8.2" that the guy didn't know how desperate I was to find one cause I am sure the price would have gone up

Glad to finally hear about the 8.5s. But what I was leaning toward, after you pic Ik one up for a grand, what are axles, your choice of gears, different driveshaft, and more than likely posi going to cost.

You are going to spend $600 for a decent 30 spline posi and axles. You can subtract some money off if using a spool. Just a quick search on eBay found New pairs of Moser axles for $272 and a new 30 spline Powertrack carrier for $320. You would be spending this money on a Ford 9" as well.

I have been searching for a replacement for my 7.5 for a few months.. A gino to 1.8 seems to be the norm for a 10 bolt 8.5 around northern east coast with unknown condition not to mention shipping or a 4 + hr road trip. There is plenty of MC Posi around for 500 or under. Looked at QP 2500.shipped that includes a few upgrades.
Still on the fence.........still looking.....
I just don't trust the 8.5 with factory axels for more than 400 hp.
I had one break on me years ago with only 125 hit of juice, a friend had one slide out because of C clip damage.
If I ever did go with a 8.5 again C clip eliminator would be a priority.

True^^^. But that's why I'm going with the junkyard 8.8" w/ 3.73 I got on half off day for $55 on my BBB Century project. The disc brakes will act as a c-clip eliminator. (I ran one like this on my 750+ hp BBC s10 w/trans brake with no issues). I will need the Southside truss kit $500, and after its in the car running, I will get a nice locker of some sort. I will have $1000 into it, but I can spread the cost out 3 ways. The 4.5" offset rear wheels w/ Ford pattern have been bought already. I needed wheels for this build anyway, so I did not factor that into the cost of installation, as I just planned ahead. If the original poster has the money to spend all at once, I do not blame him for going with QP 9".

No. If I recall correctly, Mac says it clears 3" exhaust.

As much as you can throw at it. Like normal the limiting factor is how much traction you actually have. They've been known to live behind 550-600hp with no issues bone stock
