BUILD THREAD Project long time coming

Still has the original oil pump in it. Was just going to crank it over with the fuel injection unhooked for a minute.

Well worked for a little while tonight, got the vacuum hose adapter from 1/2" to 3/8" in so I could hook the fitting on the back of the intake up to the brake booster.

Reinstalled the gas tank, and started the wiring for the fuel pump. The battery is in the spare tire well so it won't have far to go but I'm running 10awg anyways after seeing what others have gone thru. Should be way more than enough for what I'm doing.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!

Might I regale you with an anecdote?

I did the cam swap on my truck back in the spring of 2013. I was doing a DOD delete so the heads came off to replace the lifters and trays. I went with "LS7" lifters (LS2). I had the pan off and pulled the oil pump as well. I did all this in the driveway as well as replacing the torque converter. I did the work nights after work and on the weekends so the truck was down for a few months.

I soaked the new lifters in oil for at least a few days before they went in. When it was all back together, I pulled the spark plugs, disabled the fuel pump and spun the hell out of it with the starter. I never saw oil pressure on the gauge.

I put the plugs in it and gave it a crank. It started right up and the oil pressure came up immediately. It had a lifter hammering. I let it idle. It came up to temp. I fast idled it with the pedal. That lifter would not pump up. I shut it off and walked away, dejected. I entertained thoughts of selling the truck.

The next day I cranked it up and got more of the same. I continued to entertain thoughts of selling the truck. The third day, it pumped up. It's been fine since. It now has 111k miles on the cam swap so it turned out fine.

We bought a 20k mile L96 6.0 for my brother's 78 Z28. We swapped the cam but left the heads on and reused the lifters (the swap was performed Russian Roulette style). The engine sat around at least a year after us buying it. Probably closer to three years.

After my experience with my truck, we primed my brother's engine with an electric pump plumbed into an oil galley on the left front corner of the block. I think we bought the primer "kit" from someone on LS1 Tech but I don't remember. It worked great. Google it. You can make your own relatively cheap. There is one out there for $90, which compared to the cost of the engine is nothing. While the pump worked 6 quarts of oil into the pan via the oil galley, I turned the engine by hand. We then drained the oil back into the container and did it again. When we cranked the engine, no issues.

Consider it.

I get what you're saying, and the old me agrees with you. But how about the old guys with a Corvette that put it up for the winter by the end of September, and don't even start it until the beginning of May. They don't prime the engine, they hop in it and crank it up. Not saying it's necessarily right either....

Agreed. You didn't replace anything?

Just kidding. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Do you know how long it's been since it ran?

Geesh Jared, you act as if he should be concerned about not having any/enough oil pressure??? I don't see any reason why those purple valve covers won't fit onto the next motor.
