BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

I would get another one if possible and start testing things out on it.

I seen the copper(?) in the first pic and actually liked it so wasn't sure if thats what you were talking about.

Can you stripe it like a pin stripe and continue it onto the door piece?

Is that the copper layer coming through?

Honestly no one will never see a different after the clear and the car is painted.................no I am wrong you will & it will drive you nuts.

do you have another of the same trim piece in the shed ? if so ....sand this one.

That may yet be an option Dave. I’d like to see what everyone’s general consensus is on it first tho, as that’s a ton of additional work if I have to do it.

Yep, that was precisely what I was referring to. It’s not the copper layer, it’s the nickle on top of the copper. But it’s enough of a difference to be noticeable beside the raw pot metal.

I’m not opposed to the idea of painting just the recess, maybe not a pinstripe, but maybe the dark grey that the top half of the car is going to be.
That might look kinda trick actually!

Before Turna suggested it, I was thinking a pro pinstriper could probably do that touchup in a flash. It's not the same thing, but we've all seen pin stripe/air brush faux chrome trim that we didn't realize wasn't real trim until we got up close and examined the hood/fender/whatever.

Any pinstripers in the crowd?

Cheers - Gary

Another great option!
Thank you.

Guys, I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks.
You’ve helped kickstart the brainstorming and creative process.

Another option if I’m considering painting just that area, is to go with the silver like I had originally planned (and already bought the paint for). Not paint the whole thing silver, just the recessed area. It should be an extremely close match to the raw pot metal, I matched it up to the brushed aluminum as best I could. Then I’d only have this very small area to duplicate the brushed look on.

Either that or the grey of the upper half, these are sounding like the options I like the best so far.
🙂

These guys are onto something! A new twist from me, though: go with a really bright color in that recess, something that compliments the brushed, charcoal, and white- like sl*t red.

I agree, the guys have definitely got me thinking on alternatives, and I like where your head’s at Bruce.
With one exception:
I wouldn’t go with a bright red, it’ll clash with the claret red interior, but maybe paint it claret itself.

I’m working with Scott (InjectedCutty) as we speak, he’s gonna do up a couple quick and dirty photoshops of different color options so I can see how they’d look.
He’s already done one where the recess is the same grey as the top half is gonna be, and I’m liking what I’m seeing so far...

I'd say leave it, it looks good. I try to remind myself the enemy of good is perfect......

So what’s the enemy of “settling for second best” or “good enough” when you know you can do better...??
😉😀
