BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

I like the grey Donovan. Classy.

Wait! Wait! I have an opinion too!

No, not really. I just want you to restore the trim on my wagon. 😉

Oh, heck, D, in for a penny, in for a dime. Since this whole mini-project is going to take maybe 1 ml of paint, what about dripping in one drop of black to see if that darkens the gray enough to minimize the contrast with the colour of the rest of the trim?

edit: Wait. I think I read your explanation wrong. I think I'm talking about darkening the silver, not the gray. The forward part of the sample. My point is that I think you can minimize the contrast to the point of not noticeable but if you want to make it a highlight, that's fine with me. end of edit.

OK, I'll be quiet now.

Best - Gary

Didja notice the "u" that I threw in, in a tardy tribute to Canada day?

Thank you sir, and thanks for your patience. I haven’t forgotten about you. I know you’re still hanging in there to get a detailed write up on how this trim and windows get installed. My apologies for taking so long and getting sidetracked, but I’m working towards that portion now.

Not at all, Donovan, as you get to it works for me. At the moment I'm up to my elbows in another "This Old House" kitchen remodel project that's going to take up most of this summer anyhow.

I like the decision on the grey stripe, gonna look slick!

Ok guys, I’m making a slight alteration to the original plan.
I quoted Gary’s post above, because this kinda pertains to what he suggested.

Kinda.

I’m still gonna run the grey stripe in the recess on the mouldings, but with one small change. I had originally said that I was going to keep the grey gloss and the rest of the mouldings flat, but I’d really like to have the entire pieces covered in clear coat. This way there would be virtually no masking edges from the grey, (and no where to risk chipping an edge or having the grey start to peel) and they’d be entirely protected.

So, I’m going to mask and spray the grey first, then unmask and shoot the entire pieces in the flattened clear coat. This will make the grey appear flat as well, but I think it just might be the small amount of contrast that sets it apart from the body. An added benefit of doing it this way is that if I should get any bleed through of the grey underneath the edges of the tape, I can carefully clean them up with some lacquer thinner on a Q-tip before applying the clear.

That’s about all I have to report for now, both quarter glass trim pieces are fully sanded, prepped and almost ready to go. I’m just at the masking stage now:

With any luck, by the end of the day today, I should have both pieces finish painted and curing.

Oh and on one more quick note, I’ve driven the car some since applying the under hood decals and have put it through a couple of heat cycles. The new emissions decal that was prone to lifting before now shows no signs of doing so since using the adhesion promoter!
🙂

D.

Is it going to continue on to the trim on the door?

Absolutely.
For continuity, the grey has to extend on to the door mouldings. I’m nowhere near ready to paint those yet as they’re going to require a lot of work to get straight and receive the brushed treatment, so they’ll get done at a later date.

The paint is officially flying, in fact I’m posting between coats, pics soon to follow.
🙂
