BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Can you get into the area with sandpaper wrapped on a rounded sanding block. I believe it is in an area where most folks won't notice it but you will each time you open the door.
Randy in Calgary

Yes I can Randy. But the nickle and copper layers are so incredibly hard, it’s taking forever to sand it off the flat surfaces with 80 grit on a block. I’d be there a month of days sanding my poor fingers to the bone and probably still not get it all off in that little recess.
It’s just in a really ignorant area to work on.

And I fear you’re right, being where it is it’ll bug me each time I get in the car if I’m not 100% happy with it to begin with.

By the way, we’re neighbors! I’m in Calgary too, how come I haven’t seen you around?
What part of town? I’m in the south east.

I’m in the Edgemont N.W. area. I’ve only just got the Malibu of a 5 year storage.

Well congrats on getting it back out!
It’s always nice to hear from a local member.
I’d you need any help with anything, or just someone to bench race or cruise with, drop me a line.
It’d be nice to meet you.

as we've come to expect, everything is looking great!

I love how you come up with these solutions to problems most of us end up scratching our heads on ! as far as the mis-color on the trim, I do believe that it'll drive you insane if you don't take care of it now. as others have said, I agree with running a pinstripe, and I'm leaning towards the idea of the grey color, as IIRC, you were talking about running a claret pinstripe behind the window and trim to break up the main colors, weren't you?

keep up the awesome work, as I'm sure you already have the plan set in motion before I even finish this post!🤣

don't stress it out too badly, and keep enjoying the drives, as I'm once again enjoying the Chief! (I think I've put more miles on him in the last week, than in the last year!)

Thanks for the encouragement and weighing in on things Darin.

You’re absolutely right on both accounts, I’m not above realizing that I’m my own worst enemy most of the time. I totally do stress out over the little details way more than I probably should. I can’t help it, I’m a self proclaimed perfectionist!

You’re also right in remembering that there’s gonna be a double claret pinstripe separating the two tone. You’re likely right in predicting I won’t be satisfied with leaving the recess the slightly different color.

On the plus side however, I do believe that I’ve finally come to a decision on what I’m gonna do, thanks to everyone here’s suggestions. I can’t for one minute take credit for the solution, it was only due to the creativity of the guys on here that provided it to me.

See the next post to see what that is...

Btw, glad to hear you’re getting seat and bonding time with The Chief! It’s about time you caught a break!

Alright gents, after much bandying about of ideas and suggestions, I think I’ve finally made up my mind on what I’m gonna do with the recessed areas in the quarter glass trim and door belt mouldings.

After seeing a couple photoshopped pics back from Scott in different colors, I decided to mask off a small section of the quarter glass moulding and hand brush two different colors on it to see how they’d look in person. I brushed on the silver I originally bought to spray these pieces with on the front section, and some of the grey from the two tone I had left over on the back section.
The silver was just a thought and an experiment to see how and if it would match the raw pot metal.

I had to turn off nearly all the lights to try and get a couple decent pics without too much glare, but here’s how it looked:

Granted, the silver doesn’t match very well right now, it would have to be thinner, the gloss knocked off, and textured to give it the brushed look, but I’m not really a fan of it. Pretty disappointed in it to be honest.

The grey however, I think looks right at home. I’d even keep it gloss to match the rest of the grey on the body. It looks (and should look) even better from a distance when it’s all done like this IMO:

The claret wasn’t attempted because, well, I don’t have any claret paint right now, but also because I plan on separating the two tone with a double claret pinstripe and I thought it would get looking too busy in this area.

So there you have it, I’ve finally made my decision! These areas will be masked off and painted gloss grey to match the body after the rest of the quarter glass mouldings get sprayed with flat clear. When it comes time to do the door belt mouldings, the grey will carry over into those recesses as well.

Thanks once again for all your input, opinions, and suggestions. It was very much appreciated!

I know you have made your mind up, but I'll just throw this out there....
Yes, a double Claret and a single in the trim would be very busy, however, if the lower were a single stripe, the 2 would converge above halfway up the window.
I think that would be pretty cool.
