BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Wow! Spraying such a thin line! D, you need to take up pinstriping to add to your 749 other skills!

Wait. I said I was going to be quiet.

nvm

gary

Yeah well, if you want it half-*ss straight and not wobbly like my shaky hand would do, ya play it safe and mask it off and spray it!
Lol

Ok all you picture-o-philes (not to be confused with the other word that sounds like that), here ya go.

I’m too hot, tired and hungry to type any more than this, so I’ll just post up the pics.

Those pieces turned out really slick D!!! I think the grey will look perfect once installed!

Thanks Scott.
It was a lot of work, much more than I anticipated it being. I feel better now that I’ve cooled down a bit, had a rest and a bite to eat, so I can detail a little more what went into them.

Once I had the pieces finish sanded, it was thoroughly clean and tape them off, then adhesion promoter on the area to go grey. Then mix and spray the grey, 3 coats, and clean the gun. Once that was done, I had to carefully unmask them while they were still tacky and set them aside while I experimented with mixing just the right amount of flattening agent into the clear coat. It took 3 experimental batches of clear and 3 sprayout cards to get the right amount of lessened gloss to match the rest of the trim.

Then clean and spray the pieces again with adhesion promoter, this time over everything, let flash off, and apply 3 coats of the flattened clear.
Clean the gun again.
Thankfully the flattened clear dries fairly quickly, and I was able to move them aside while I did the weatherstrip channels.

Clean and adhesion promote the channels, mix up the satin black and spray 3 coats on them. Then, you guessed it, clean the gun.
A lot of work for sure, but I’m really hoping it’ll all be worth it in the end. At least I will have something that not too many people have done on their cars, not just on a G body, but in general.

I love having something different from everyone else.

Tomorrow, finally install the quarter glass trim and hopefully get the side windows and upper door weatherstrips installed!

I've often thought my OCD was worse than most. I now know yours is worse and may god have mercy on your soul.

Meh it’s just how I roll, I let my OCD eat and totally own it.

You obviously haven’t read through The Juggernaut’s build thread. THATS my OCD at its finest!

Hi Donovan,
looks very fine; amazing work as usual.
Leave it as it is and don´t care about the opinion of others
You have to like it and drive the next years........... 👍🙂

I got the quarter glass trim pieces installed the other day along with the vertical weatherstrip channels finally. They fit and look very good IMO:

I then grabbed the upper roof rail seals that I picked up nearly a year ago and installed them. They’re Metro Super Soft brand, they fit very well and look quite good much to my surprise. I know some of you guys have had less than perfect issues with that brand, but I was actually quite pleased with them especially after having some concerns if they were even right for my application:

The driver’s side window will have to be adjusted a little bit to get the proper fit to seal to the weatherstrip at the back, it touches but doesn’t actually sit in the recess to seal like it’s supposed to. No big deal, easy fix with some adjustments the next time the door panel is off.

Picked up some new butyl strips to reinstall the quarter glass windows, and my special order Edelbrock QuadraJet parts finally came in at the speed shop yesterday:

Currently working on getting the quarter glass trim and seals permanently installed after cleaning them up and removing all the old nasty butyl from the seals and inside the car.
The old butyl is the bane of my existence, that stuff is horrible. I’ve also got to remove it from the glass itself as it seems the window tint guys never bothered even though I specifically asked them to.

One cleaned....

Pics of the finished trim, window, weatherstrip and blacked out pillar look to come later if I get it all done today.

The trim looks great, D...I like it. All the little subtle touches are going to make people scratch their heads..."What's different about this car? I can't put my finger on it." 🙂

It's nice to know that Edelbrock Q-jet parts will work on a Rochester carb.
