BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

I approve! on the moldings!

Well done!

Currently working on getting the quarter glass trim and seals permanently installed after cleaning them up and removing all the old nasty butyl from the seals and inside the car.
The old butyl is the bane of my existence, that stuff is horrible. I’ve also got to remove it from the glass itself as it seems the window tint guys never bothered even though I specifically asked them to.

What process and chemicals did you use to remove the sticky black mess off without harming the window and tint? Thanks!

The trim looks great, D...I like it. All the little subtle touches are going to make people scratch their heads..."What's different about this car? I can't put my finger on it." 🙂

It's nice to know that Edelbrock Q-jet parts will work on a Rochester carb.

Thank you Jack.
Hopefully that’ll be the case. Still easily recognizable, but subtly different.

I had to check my QJ book and verify with the guys here first, but it does indeed appear that the Edelbrock QJ parts are interchangeable.

Btw, congrats on this month’s GBOTM! You had my vote!

Oh good! That was keeping me up at night, wondering if Turna would approve...

Just kidding buddy, thanks!

At some point we are going to need a new rating, maybe a rocket blasting off to commemorate these awesome posts, winner doesn't seem good enough. LOL

Hahahaha
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Maybe my OCD pays off after all?
😉

That paint line on the trim is a great touch! She’s almost a daily driver!

Lookin great, like some kind of rare Hurst trim option that should have been.

Thanks guys, I’m glad y’all like it!
It’s definitely grown on me as well. I wasn’t sure if the grey stripe was gonna look good there or not before doing it, but now that it’s done I think it’s just the little detail it needed.

Short answer?

Boat loads of patience. The old butyl is miserable stuff any way you slice it, ya just gotta bear down and get through it. Generally speaking, it likes to stick to itself even more than it likes to stick to everything else, so if you can get a bit started in a ball, you use that to “pick up” the stuff you’re trying to get off.

Kinda like using masking tape to pick lint off your clothes.

Hafrod has done a video on here on “easily” removing the stuff but I find that other factors play into how well the old stuff comes off. Ambient temperature, age of it, how dirty it is, etc etc.

If what you’re dealing with is really thick, slicing the majority of it off with an Xacto knife and only leaving a thin layer saves a whole pile of time. Once you’ve got most of it off and there’s only a little residue left, industrial wax and grease remover or lacquer thinner takes care of it very quickly. If you’ve got tint, use the wax and grease remover, it won’t attack the tint like the thinner might.

That was my plan all along!!!!

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It does look great!!!

As always awesome work!!

Alrighty everyone...

After an unexpected delay due to the old butyl taking much longer to get off than I expected, I finally got both quarter glass reinstalled with the new butyl today.

This pretty much wraps up the trim, weatherstrip and glass reinstallation, I’m going to give things a few days to “seat” and settle in. After that, I’ll give it a water test to ensure everything is leak-free before the rest of the back part of the interior gets reinstalled.

I know many of you have waited a very long time to finally see the end result, and how the pillar-less look would go, so here it is.
Without further ado,

I love seeing the little details, like the OEM writing on the glass. It adds to the authenticity IMO:

Now that you all have seen how the trim and seals have to go on, you can understand why I had to prep and paint everything I did first. The installation of these parts is now permanent, they won’t be coming back off again, not even for paint.

One more quick comparo, before with the old vinyl top and “B” pillar trim:

And after, with the “B” pillar trim gone and it blacked out for the pillar-less look:

It’ll look even better at night!
