BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Yes very intrested! You helped me with my quarter window removal and install

Alrighty everyone...

After an unexpected delay due to the old butyl taking much longer to get off than I expected, I finally got both quarter glass reinstalled with the new butyl today.

This pretty much wraps up the trim, weatherstrip and glass reinstallation, I’m going to give things a few days to “seat” and settle in. After that, I’ll give it a water test to ensure everything is leak-free before the rest of the back part of the interior gets reinstalled.

I know many of you have waited a very long time to finally see the end result, and how the pillar-less look would go, so here it is.
Without further ado,
Pics!!!

I love seeing the little details, like the OEM writing on the glass. It adds to the authenticity IMO:

Now that you all have seen how the trim and seals have to go on, you can understand why I had to prep and paint everything I did first. The installation of these parts is now permanent, they won’t be coming back off again, not even for paint.

One more quick comparo, before with the old vinyl top and “B” pillar trim:

And after, with the “B” pillar trim gone and it blacked out for the pillar-less look:

It’ll look even better at night!

Looks great, as always. I like the pillar less look 👍

Donovan,
Ive found another good way to get all that black sticky crap off the quarter windows is to chill them. Once that stuff gets cold it gets thicker and doesn't really stick to much so removing it is fairly easy. On some windows I did in preparation for my cutlass I put them in the freezer till they chilled down, then I was able to just peal the black stuff off with really no trouble. One mistake I did make was made it into a big ball and then sat it on my workbench and forgot about it. The next day it was a sticky blob so that was fun

looks great D! when you started talking about this, I couldn't really visualize the finished look, but am blown away by the result! I don't recall ever seeing anyone do anything like this, love your ingenuity!

I do love the comparison shots! shows just how much has changed on the looks!

I thought about doing that Jared. But I’m just not sure there’s enough guys on here with ‘78-80 Cutlasses that would be looking to reinstall their quarter glass windows. I know that some of the other models share the same principles, but my write-up would be detailed and specifically oriented to the Cutlass.

Perhaps I’d consider it (I have no issues with it whatsoever, I’m doing it for old80cs anyways) if there was enough feedback and requests for it from the guys?

What say you everyone, any interest in seeing a detailed write-up on how to reinstall quarter glass on our cars?
I would like to read this. I have been doing research after I came outside 2 days ago and say this

I'm sure if you put it out here where everyone can see it, it will not only help the three guys in this thread that are expressing interest, but will undoubtedly help non-members. You do these write-ups so well, Donovan, that it just seems like it would be a shame to not put the information out here for anyone who might need it.

Thanks for all the pictures, Donovan, the completed install looks fantastic. I book marked the pages so I can study them further. They'll definitely help get the ones in my car re-installed again.

The pillar less look is really something, very cool!

Maybe do a separate "how to" thread so the info is out there? You do such awesome write-ups it would be a shame not to have it out there. It likely would become a sticky.

On a hunch, I decided to drill out the spot welds and separate the inside front reinforcement from the rest of the top pan.

Good thing I did...

The little bit of blue you see is just machinists blue marking compound I used to mark the location of the front rollers and brackets for reassembly.

This is gonna take a bit to save and restore.
