Still plugging away.
After my successes on the trunk lid and hood, InjectedCutty told me I absolutely HAD to go after the fenders next. He just wouldn’t take no for an answer, and wouldn’t be reasoned with. Slave driver that guy is. 🙄
Soooo, in the interest of keeping him calm, I agreed and figured I’d start with the right front.
This is what it looked like after the initial 220 blocking...
...and after starting the repairs with the finishing putty.
Because I was working around the marker light cutouts, I had to pull the light out of storage and do a quick test to make sure everything still fits like it’s supposed to.
It’s been so long since I’ve had these installed I’d forgotten how cool these are gonna look in there!
I believe I’ve got the area repaired and (hopefully) straight now, so I finished off this evening by getting it wiped down and masked up for more high build. I’ll do the same as with the trunk and hood and leave it masked until after I know if it’s gonna block out straight or not. That way if it needs to be re-primed again it’ll save time and material.
I should be either shooting it or already have it sprayed by the time most of you read this later today. One area at a time until there’s no more areas to go after!

Decent day today, I got the fender and header panel shot this morning...
...while Mike worked on stripping all the old weather checked and peeling paint from the back bumper filler panel I scored from the auto wreckers a while back.
Let it cure for several hours, and while I was waiting I got started on the fender on the other side.
Thankfully this side isn’t going to need as much attention as the other. This evening after dinner, I went out and blocked the fresh primer. It is still gonna need one more round (because I’m super anal and fussy), but it’s really damn close!
Couple of closeups of the areas I’m not totally satisfied with, but it won’t take much to get these tuned up now especially compared to before I started.
So tomorrow night after work and dinner I’ll hit it with another round of primer and finish up the repairs on the other side, then Tuesday night I’ll be able to block it for the last time. (My work isn’t one that can be done from home, I’m one of the ones that’s required to be out there on the front lines). So no mandated time off, although I could sure make good use of it to move this thing along!

Disappointing news and a serious kink in the plans for the car today guys.
After an entire year of waiting I went into the high school to service their 2 screw compressors today. I’ve been waiting for this day for 365 long days to hopefully arrange a window to use their new state of the art booth to shoot the car in. But with the virus BS that’s going around now, the school is on complete lockdown indefinitely. There was absolutely no one around except the maintenance supervisor that let me in, even the rooms and hallways were dark. Definitely no sign of the autobody shop teacher who I’d have to arrange it with. With talk of the schools being shut down now until possibly the next school year, there goes my hopes of using that booth to spray in this spring.
Here’s the booth and shop that I almost certainly WON’T be using this year:
I guess I really shouldn’t be that surprised, this is just my luck. Story of my life, always a day late and a dollar short. Nothing ever seems to go the way I plan. Now I know I should just quit my whining and accept it, lives at stake, the greater good and all that, but dammit! I was really hoping this would work out.
It’s not the total end of the world, I’ve got a couple of options as backup plans. They’re just not as attractive as the high school one was. I have 2 other customers that have offered me their booths to use, but neither is as big or nice. I do have a third customer that’s got a decent booth who I’m in pretty tight with, that is really slow right now. Which is actually the next most attractive option. Now I’ve gotta find the time to stop in and talk to them when they’re both there, and see if they’d be open to the possibility of me using their booth on a weekend while they’re closed.
Fingers crossed on that option.
Not much else to really report on yet, I did get the passenger side fender and header panel reprimed and successfully blocked out, but that’s about it.
The body lines are super crisp and straight, and the marker light cutouts are finally looking really good. As always, it looks a lot better in person.
The driver’s side repairs are completed, it’s ready for more primer on that side, so tonight is gonna be more masking.

It’s a shame that you won’t be able to spray in that nice booth but don’t let it get you down. My regular job I work in a brand new oversized booth, but on Saturdays I work in an old, poorly maintained booth. I’ve found that as long as I’m meticulous and try and do all the little thing right I can still get a quality, clean paint job. I’m sure that you could get a quality job right there in your garage if you wanted to.

Chin up buddy. The car looks fantastic now and will look amazing when you are done painting it. Stay healthy, keep working on it, and things will work out. It's a shame that the snooch booth at the school fell through but a guy with your talent doesn't need all that. Nice, to be sure, but not necessary. Sean's Camaro was painted in a home made booth. Hafrod painted his Aeroback Salon and his 55 in his garage.
I know its a really tough break for you Donovan, but it looks like you've been through your share of those with the car, and you have always prevailed. I'm sure you'll find a solution for this hurdle. I'm still looking forward to seeing that car all finished, and hopefully, a big smile on your face. Hang in there.
I find people are much more apt to give you what you want when you've treated them and the workers to a box of fresh donuts. 😎
Yup, gotta pay to play.
Tie some donuts on a string, and while the crew is busy, roll the car into the booth. Works every time.
