BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

I will ensure Donovan has a poor influence for shenanigans.

Like I need one. I’m perfectly capable of making my own questionable decisions!

It's more fun with a partner. Besides, I havent had a province wide Bolo on my car for like 5 years.

Lordy that's some kind of super-nice save on the trash in the paint. I wasn't sure if the emblem would be too much on the trunklid, but I think it works well in the grey like that. Nice contrast to the grey.

Grilles came out ultra-cool with the black inlays around the headlights. Flows well. Factory should have done that, those lazy bastages.

The emblem is great, something different. I usually like the writing style of Oldsmobile emblem better than that style but it looks good. I think the red and black is the difference. What year did they switch? I thought our 81 Delta 88 had the writing style. I usually don't like it because it reminds me of the fwd cars which were the beginning of the end for Oldsmobile. I removed all mine with little desire to put them back on my 88. It does complete your car Donovan, good choice.

The rocket emblem was used like that on the stock configuration because after 1978, they did away with the Rocket in the taillights, but since Oldscool is a different animal, it has 78 tails installed. I like them better than the later ones, but JMO. I made sure to send the "correct for 1980" "Oldsmobile" script because even 78's used that script emblem up through 1984. For those in the know, the 78-84 Cutlass G-body trunk emblem is the same exact emblem as the 81-86 front bumper 2 door emblem without the pegs and has the sticky back tape instead.

Regardless, the whole thing just works. A lot of subtle, personalized changes that most non-Olds folks won't even pick up on.

I am my own harshest critic. Without a doubt.

After eyeballing the AstroRoof insert with a fresh set of eyes tonight, I found a couple things I wasn’t happy with. Just really minor stuff, slight ripples etc, but it was enough that it made me want to correct it. After all, I didn’t bust my @ss to make sure this thing was straight as an arrow in the bodywork and block sanding stages to have some ripples in the clear make it look like it wasn’t straight.

If it wasn’t on the roof in a high visibility area, and on the darker color as well, I might’ve left it. But moving around it and watching the reflection move on me was really eating at me.
Not cool.

So tonight I decided to revisit it and start again. From scratch. (Pardon the pun). Entire thing right down flat again, this time with the 1000 grit on a longer block. This should eliminate any ripples with crosshatch sanding just like block sanding primer.

The other driving factor in redoing this was that once the weatherstripping seal is glued in, I won’t be able to go back and do any more wet sanding or polishing here. The edge of the polishing pad will just tear up the seal and the pad itself. So any corrections have to be done now, at this stage.

Sometimes you have to go backwards to move forwards. Just the way it is. Damn the perfectionist in me!

Tomorrow we polish again and see where we stand. 🤞🏻

What's he doing??

He found dust in the clear 🤣

All kidding aside, your fixes are my education. Keep up the flawless and relentless attention to detail!
