Details and baby steps.
Got the new NOS Oldsmobile emblem donated by 69HurstOlds (thanks Mike!) for the trunk lid positioned and installed, along with the original rocket emblem. The rocket needed a little TLC, but with some time and new model paint from the hobby shop, it looks good as new.
I painted the lower half of the emblem black to match the fender ones I had already done, just to change things up a bit and let others know that this isn’t your average ordinary Oldsmobile.

Up front, after several nights of work today I finally got the headlight bezels and grilles finished up and now permanently installed.
Headlight bezels:

But before I could install the grilles, I had to prep, mask off, adhesion promote, and paint these two little sections so they’d match up with the headlight bezels:

Grilles now completely finished and permanently installed as well. I love the look:

It’s nice finally being able to see the “face” back on this old girl after being off for so long!
Once that milestone was behind me, today I turned my attention to the AstroRoof. I got notification that the AstroRoof headliner board I ordered is scheduled to be at the border by the end of the day on Wednesday, so I figured I’d better get after wet sanding and polishing the insert. That needs to be done before I can glue the original seal back in, and that all needs to be done before the headliner can go in.
So...

Why does the AstroRoof insert need to be wet sanded and polished? Well one of the many problems we encountered while in the booth was trash that would seemingly appear out of nowhere and blow into the clear as I was spraying. Although we had the car super clean before each stage, it would suddenly show up. I think the booth wasn’t very clean.
Lots of this kind of crap all over the car:

Also, midway through the second coat of clear and after one of the many times I had Mike refill the paint gun, he didn’t get the lid on quite right and sealed up, so I had 2 nasty drips of clear drop onto the roof. It doesn’t show up very well in the picture, but this is one of them:

It was much worse in person than it appears in the picture. However, with a little time and careful wet sanding, I got it and all the other bits of trash nicely sanded and levelled out and removed, along with the orange peel.
Wet sanding like this can be a beautiful thing as long as you have the material to work with.

The insert is ready for careful polishing, but for now I’ve got a splitting headache and have decided to take a short break from it. I’ll probably end up out there and doing it a little later tonight, but we shall see.
Like I said, details and baby steps.
