BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

My 11 yr old can even appreciate the Ross Man; she has socks with his likeness.
People dis him, but that mutha is legit. Even in death he can paint better than most.

But sorry, I digress...

As much as it pains me to see good, NOS parts get modified right out of the box, the brushed look actually works well in this case. It's not like he's painting the inlays Joker Purple or something. It's subtle, but sweet.

1 more for thought....

now back to the regular scheduled build....

Details and baby steps.

Got the new NOS Oldsmobile emblem donated by 69HurstOlds (thanks Mike!) for the trunk lid positioned and installed, along with the original rocket emblem. The rocket needed a little TLC, but with some time and new model paint from the hobby shop, it looks good as new.

I painted the lower half of the emblem black to match the fender ones I had already done, just to change things up a bit and let others know that this isn’t your average ordinary Oldsmobile.

Up front, after several nights of work today I finally got the headlight bezels and grilles finished up and now permanently installed.

But before I could install the grilles, I had to prep, mask off, adhesion promote, and paint these two little sections so they’d match up with the headlight bezels:

Grilles now completely finished and permanently installed as well. I love the look:

It’s nice finally being able to see the “face” back on this old girl after being off for so long!

Once that milestone was behind me, today I turned my attention to the AstroRoof. I got notification that the AstroRoof headliner board I ordered is scheduled to be at the border by the end of the day on Wednesday, so I figured I’d better get after wet sanding and polishing the insert. That needs to be done before I can glue the original seal back in, and that all needs to be done before the headliner can go in.

So...

Why does the AstroRoof insert need to be wet sanded and polished? Well one of the many problems we encountered while in the booth was trash that would seemingly appear out of nowhere and blow into the clear as I was spraying. Although we had the car super clean before each stage, it would suddenly show up. I think the booth wasn’t very clean.

Lots of this kind of crap all over the car:

Also, midway through the second coat of clear and after one of the many times I had Mike refill the paint gun, he didn’t get the lid on quite right and sealed up, so I had 2 nasty drips of clear drop onto the roof. It doesn’t show up very well in the picture, but this is one of them:

It was much worse in person than it appears in the picture. However, with a little time and careful wet sanding, I got it and all the other bits of trash nicely sanded and levelled out and removed, along with the orange peel.
Wet sanding like this can be a beautiful thing as long as you have the material to work with.

The insert is ready for careful polishing, but for now I’ve got a splitting headache and have decided to take a short break from it. I’ll probably end up out there and doing it a little later tonight, but we shall see.

Like I said, details and baby steps.

Amazing work as always bud. I love the grilles on that car.

Not quite #metallicgreymirror worthy, but close enough for this old girl. Just a cruiser...

drips over dry spray any day..looking good.

Agreed, and thanks Chris!

Thank you Jared. I was never terribly enamoured with these grilles, but they’ve slowly grown on me and now I’m ok with them.

I think I may try that black background trick on my SS nose when I go to block the grille off....
It looks stellar!

Thank you!

This car is an absolute work of art. I am curious though, can we expect a wicked video of you blowing donuts in the thing at any point?

Thank you and absolutely!

Contrary to what some of the guys on here think, I build my cars to be driven, not sit around as garage art. Maybe not daily as some do, but then again I have the company truck for those duties. This will fulfill its role as a fun summertime cruiser with the occasional shenanigans behind the wheel once it’s back together.
Not last year but the year before, I was ripping ‘nuts in a empty dead-end and had an absolute blast. I just didn’t think to get the better half to video it at the time.

From 2 years ago (I lost all of last summer due to being down for critical bodywork):
