BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Looking awesome as always!!

Awesome update, looking good!

Donovan,

No words . Absolutely amazing work. I have definitely been an unintentional hypocrite myself. You're not alone my friend!

Thank you gentlemen! I really appreciate the kind words!

Two things:

You are getting those amazing factory 4x10 speakers ah dirty! Good news is you can just vacuum and air hose them out and they won't sound any worse . . . 😛

I predict you will pretty up that 10 bolt rear before you are done. I noticed it right away when I started sticking all these shiny new parts on mine and, always garaged with only 28K miles, it wasn't that bad. Then I popped the cover to put on a Trickflow and all of this wonderful metal came out with the fluid. I mean a BUNCH! Don't remember what your plans were/are for under the hood when you are done but you might want to take a peek inside yours as well. Granted, mine could be a fluke but, I only have about 4000 miles on my rear with the big block but I haven't been that hard on it and only 24,000 before that with the 307 so I suspect by the 80s that perhaps the quality of the internals had gone down? Anyway, better safe than sorry . . .

Looking good dude!

I noticed that too haha

LOL
Of all the things I posted on, you guys comment on my blatant disregard for preserving the integrity of the absolutely "stellar" 37 year old factory speakers...
🙄

Yes, as you've noticed, I haven't taken any precautions to try and protect the 4x10's. They're obviously old and outdated, but beyond that the integral tweeters are already torn so I really didn't see the point in trying to protect them.
I currently have no plans for updating the audio system, as it's so far down the priority list right now it's not even funny. But I will be addressing it at some point down the line. The car still has the original functioning factory AM/FM radio in it, and whatever I do to update the system, I'd like to replace it with something that looks at least somewhat original.

To be honest, it's been so long since I dabbled in car audio, I'd have to start learning it all over again. The GF loves the 10" sub in my Lincoln LS daily, and has informed me that the Olds needs to have one as well, so there's that.
Lol

Canon, as far as the 8.5" is concerned, I've already had the cover off it and gone through it before it got installed in the car. The wear and pattern inside looked normal, with no signs of anything abnormal or abuse, so I gave it a gear oil change with Royal Purple synthetic, and reinstalled the factory cover with a new gasket. Even the axel seals looked good, so I just plunked it in. So far so good after many miles and a bit of tire abuse, but it severely needs a posi to help distribute the punishment to the road.
As far as prettying(?) it up, I don't think I will, other than maybe to clean and paint the cover. I like the fact that it doesn't jump out at you right away. Helps add to the sneaky factor!
😛

No one has commented on the exhaust tips yet. What say you guys, yay or nay?
Y'all think they suit the car or not? I like them so far (still getting used to seeing them on there), but I need to be absolutely sure before I make them permanent by welding them on.
Let me know your thoughts...

From the pics shown I'm good with them. They suit well and aren't oversize tuner-esque at all. I'd love to see them from a 10 foot standing point of view to confirm my thoughts.

Donovan,

To be honest I am not really a big fan of exhaust tips. I think a nice angle cut on the tailpipe is perfect. The tips you picked are very nice they look like they belong more on a newer car Camaro or Mustang . Sorry to be that guy. I did the same thing on cutlass with exhaust tips. On and off several times.

weld'em up! too small and short for ricer status, and tucked in enough to look good!

Good to know your rear end is good to go. I assumed mine was since it is the original but nothing like seeing about a measuring cup full of metal filings in your fluid.

And wasn't ragging you on the speakers or the rusty rear. Those factory speakers are junk so I knew why they were full of debri. I threw mine in a drawer 30 years ago and threw in some 4x10 Pioneers [that didn't help the sound any] but I do still have them. The speaker/amp/sub set up over on my build thread should wake things up nicely.

Now, on that rear end . . . Precisely what I was thinking. Sleeper! I got one side done though with the new UMI control arms, Eibachs, and Bilsteins hadn't even gotten to the drum to disk conversion and it just looked ridiculous [not sleeper] having all these new shiny components hanging off of this old rusty rear. So, I started the clean, etch, and coat method in my thread and that was a waste of time and money but once I popped that cover and realized the internals were toast, then taking it out and properly blasting and coating it made more sense. Now, if I can just get that DONE!

I have called myself "do it twice Garth" on many occasions and it is rarely even my fault. But, if I can save someone else the time and money of "doing it twice" I at least want to speak up . . . beyond that, you do your own thing as I am sure you will.

I'd tuck the tips in until the forward edge of the tip is parallel with the bottom edge of the trim. Maybe like 20mm. So basically if you were right above them you wouldn't see them. The tips themselves are pretty sharp.

Thanks Dave.

To be honest, I was on the fence about them too. They're growing on me tho. They needed something. It was being able to read the stamping on the exposed portion of pipe on the driver's side that really bugged me.

I agree, I like them better than just the square cut ends.

Good point Rick.
I keep forgetting that the pics I posted of them were less than stellar, and that you guys can't see them as well as I can.

The car has to stay inside for the next day or two (more on this later), but as soon as I can, I'll pull it out for some better pics and angles.

Mike,
Don't apologize. You're not "that guy" at all. I asked everyone's opinion, and that's what you've given me. It's not right or wrong, it's your opinion. I really value your honesty, it's what I was looking for, so thank you!

To be honest, all my G bodies up until this point have all had shorty dumps in front of the rear axel, so this is the first time I've ever had reason to contemplate exhaust tips. I've never really been a fan of them either, but this thing really needed SOMETHING. It just looked unfinished without anything there.

As I mentioned above, they're growing on me, I like 'em on there the more I get used to seeing them. So I think I'm going to keep them, weld them on, and if I come to hate them, I can always cut them off and switch for something different.

Thanks again for your input!

Thanks Darin, will do!

I'd tuck the tips in until the forward edge of the tip is parallel with the bottom edge of the trim. Maybe like 20mm. So basically if you were right above them you wouldn't see them. The tips themselves are pretty sharp.

I played around with the in and out placement, where I've got them positioned now is where they seem to look the best.
I also want them to stick past the edges of the quarter panels just a bit, to protect the (eventually) new paint.

These tips aren't the ones I like to refer to as "leg slashers", the slant is only like 30 degrees, and the edge itself is rolled. So there are no sharp edges.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Canon,

I recall reading about your trials and tribulations with your rearend. That sucks to be sure. Thankfully I've never had to deal with lunched rearend parts, other than a "C" clip that decided to drop out on my first car, a '76 Cutlass. It was interesting watching the wheel and axel assembly pass me going around the corner tho...
😱

I know you weren't ragging on me about the speakers or the rearend, that's the one thing about written language, sarcasm doesn't always convey well. (Mine that is, not yours)

I do appreciate your efforts to keep me from "doing things twice", if there's one thing I hate, it's that. Fortunately tho, I've been doing this for long enough now that I know what to do ahead of time to prevent doing it over again.

Thanks for your comments.
