BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

I questioned (in my head) the location of where you placed the 'notch' height wise then thought it probably didn't matter.

When I did mine, I tacked some fasteners to the fab table so the x-member could be bolted down square to the fab table (like it would to the chassis). Once bolted solid, I positioned where I needed/wanted the notch, marked the area for removal, tacked a couple tabs in place, & cut the section out entirely. Each side was then welded to the notch/channel piece which left the top slightly higher vs the original x-member but still w/the thickness off my fingers away from the floor pan. Your mod is far cleaner appearing vs what mine was once completed as far as a proper 'nothing to see here folks' appearance.

Thank you, I appreciate the compliment.
How you did yours is exactly how I would do it if I had to do it over again. There’s some room between the bottom of the floor and the top of the crossmember, so it’s definitely do-able. I thought I was going to end up with a lot less clearance to the top of the notch than I did, so I’m still quite happy with the end result.

'yarding' the 8.5 ? Help this Yankee understand that term 😉

You could've put a dimple in the left side pipe to help with the ground clearance. But I believe it's one of those things that you're the only that will ever notice - no one is going to 'cut you up' over the left side pipe road clearance lol.

Better than nice work as always D. :friday:

yard noun (1)

\ ˈyärd \
Definition of yard

1a : To yank, pull, tear out, or otherwise unceremoniously remove: “Cleetus, grab dat der 9/16’s, we’s gonna be yarding dat der turrbo outta yonder dump truk!”

b : Yarding, the act in-thereof of participating in the aforementioned action.

I kid, I kid.
😅

There’s zero issue with ground clearance. The clearance I was talking about was between the top of the pipe and the homemade notch.

Yep. I initially worried the fingers gap was too close but it never touched the floor. My 'Camino was a little lower so I wanted zero issues w/the 2.5" pipes touching on awkward angles when pulling in/out of parking lots or steep driveways. I like your approach to everything I've seen so far. High standards fo' sho!

Great work on the exhaust system Donovan!

Ok, brief rant about offshore made accessories.

I dropped my growling alternator off at the auto electric rebuilders today, and told them the bearings were going out in it. Asked them to re-bearing it and give it a decent going-through to make sure the rest of it was up to snuff as well.

Backstory on this alternator, it is a Performance World brand (read Chyna) bought through my local speed shop. It’s barely 2 years old, and I’d be surprised if it has 5000 kms on it. (Olds Cool hasn’t seen a lot of miles put on it yet)

So the shop calls me later in the afternoon and confirms that, yep, the bearings are done and need replacing (no surprise there, I diagnosed it as much), but then goes on to tell me that the brushes are nearly done too!
WTF??

I fully trust this shop, they’ve rebuilt or replaced many alternators and starters for me over the years, so I have no doubt that they’re telling the truth. But I just can’t get over how shitty the quality of offshore made components are these days. I know, I know, you get what you pay for, blah blah blah, but I mean c’mon.
Really? Not even 2 years of sporadic recreational driving and less than a couple thousand kms?

sh*t like this just burns my *ss. We work hard for every last cent we make, and yet are sold complete junk for a premium price in return.
At least it’s a relatively cheap fix, it’ll be ready for me in the morning, and $60 out the door. But that’s besides the point. It never should’ve already needed this in this short of time and low mileage.

Anyways, crazy old man rant over. Just needed to get it off my chest.
😡😡

Free advice- For alternator and ANY sensors....ACDelco (the old school stuff) or you will be sorry if you try to save a buck going with that cheap off-shore junk. Or Bosch. They're junk too. Had a Bosch rebuilt alternator on the 71. Junk. Tried a Bosch O2 sensor on my 87 Salon...junk. Replaced both with ACDelco and was Snoopy dancing again.

Thank you Kevin!

Unfortunately most AC Delco is Chinese or Mexican made, neither are particularly good. My AC Delco Mexican CS130 reman lasted a year. My current AC Delco Remy has lifetime warranty, has squeaked since new.
