BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Unfortunately most AC Delco is Chinese or Mexican made, neither are particularly good. My AC Delco Mexican CS130 reman lasted a year. My current AC Delco Remy has lifetime warranty, has squeaked since new.

They're still better than the rest of the garbage floating around out there.

I said "old school" stuff from ACDelco. The parts that were made likely in the 90s on back, not the chinesium crap they made later on. They're almost all crap now. There is a difference. That's why I stock piled the good stuff like ignition system stuff, alternators, starters, sensors, TPS, and M/C solenoids before it went across the oceans. Although some of it was already there back then. I got green stripe R46SX plugs out the azz. One year for Christmas, I was sending out 87 442 Delco plug sets as gifts for cripes sake. I got older Delco stuff from Japan, U.K., Singapore, Korea, plus other interesting places. Doesn't automatically mean it's bad, but I'll put a Delco part on and take my chances before I would a known chinesium knockoff. Delco used to put the country of origin on the package depending on the part if it wasn't made in the USA. They did it a lot with sensors, anyway. Later on I guess they didn't care.

China's been supplying automakers around the world on other stuff, too, for years. For example, early on, the smoked silver color for the 2010 era Camaro SS/RS 5-spoke wheels (Midnight Silver) was a special paint made in...China. Because that's where the wheels were made. People couldn't find the color anywhere, and when they did, they had to wait for it had to be imported.

Not saying all imported parts are terrible. I learned this off a GM exec years ago...USA manufactured OEM GM brake rotors are limited on a certain element (I'm getting too old so I forget which one) which ends up allowing the rotors, especially on the 98-02 Camaro/Firebirds to warp easier. However, rotors physically made in Korea didn't not have that limitation, or didn't back then, anyway. He recommended if you could get decent Korean rotors, do it.

Yeah, the older AC Delco stuff was top notch. There is a reason GM was the company to beat. Now everything is globally sourced. I was happy the last Napa Gold filter I bought was US made. That is a good point, the EPA eliminates certain products being used in the US. In places like China, the pollution is killing them from their anything goes manufacturing.

That is highly questionable. Here is a recently purchased AC Delco distributor cap. Their cap and rotors have been garbage for years. The old Accel and Blue Streak cap and rotors were about the best for years. Now who knows

So if I am reading this properly: Old cars needing new parts are the problem due to suspect materials and QC on a limited run of low demand parts?

Insert my surprised face here.

This really is the justification to update your old car as much as possible. As new cars don't share these issues. 600+hp cars roll off the assembly line and need nothing more than oil changes for 100K miles.

Why even bother with a sub-200hp boat anchor? Well other than personal suffering... I mean you don't feel more alive than when you are in pain.

Sounds like somebody still has a sore *ss! Or did you just get up on the wrong side of the world today?
I don’t know who you’re referring to with a “sub-200hp boat anchor”, but it ain’t this hombré. Neither of my rides fall into that classification.
😏

I fingered he was referring to the dismal stock state of these old birds.
