Through this entire process how the heck are you keeping those 2 front seats so clean and undamaged ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

With the back covered, I turned my attention to the front. The upper three sides received 3 coats of color, but I left the bottom portion untouched. This needs to be painted satin black to match the cowl and firewall areas. Unfortunately I can't do it until tomorrow, the fresh paint needs at least 12 hours to cure before it's safe to tape over.

Here's the pics of the back I promised earlier, now unmasked and ready to go:

As soon as I had the first coat of epoxy on, I got on the phone with my glass guys. As some of you may know, this has been the driving force behind getting these areas done. They've been pressuring me a bit to come back and get the new windshield installed.

I was able to make an appointment for this Thursday, they'll come and install the windshield and reinstall the back window at the same time. (I've already had my good friend retint the back window after it was damaged during removal, so it's ready to go too).
Thursday is perfect, it gives the fresh paint some time to cure before the glass goes back in.

After the glass is reinstalled, I can do a small amount of reassembly. The trunklid can go back on, as well as the windshield wipers, stainless moulding, and related parts.

After the black is done at the base of the cowl tomorrow, I'll pull it outside and take some more pics.

So that's it guys. The pressures off now, and I'm relieved for it. I'm not used to being under a deadline in my hobby!
I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments, let me know what y'all think!

Till tomorrow,

D.
Oh no, those sweet 4x10s. 😛

Once the back part of the roof was done, my OCD had its first revolt.
The dust and mess was already so bad, I had a fine layer of it on every single surface in the garage. I was even starting to track it into the house.

So Wednesday evening I pulled the car out and gave it and the garage a thorough blow out and cleaning. My dust pan holds something like 1 gallon, and it was full and overflowing just from the dust on the floor. Blowing the car out outside resulted in a dust storm that looked like something was on fire! Bet my neighbors were real impressed.
😎

Once I had the shop cleaned back up to an operational state, I started in on the next area of the roof. This was the front section from the windshield to the front of the AstroRoof opening. After more skimming and blocking, the dust resumed.

Thankfully, things started to move along at a little more rapid pace. I got the entire front section done Wednesday night. Much less surface area to deal with.

Tonight I resumed work, this time on the driver's side, connecting the two areas. Again, another good night, I managed to complete this area and get it blended into the other two fairly easily.

The following pics are a "walk around", taken at different angles so you get a 360 degree view:

The goal was to try to get the filler work on the horizontal part of the roof done by the end of the week. I have obligations tomorrow night, so I didn't quite meet that goal. But I came pretty damn close. If I had one more night, I would've gotten it done.

As it stands now, all that remains is this area on the passenger's side:

Here's one last pic, showing the extent of the mess, a mere one day after my big cleanup!

I can tell you this: the first guy that comes along and tells me I painted it white so my bodywork didn't have to be spot on is gonna get popped in the mouth!
Also, now you have an idea why paint jobs are so expensive and take so long. Give your bodyman a break, and maybe even a pat on the back. It'll be much more appreciated than riding his *ss!
Lol

That's all for now guys, I feel I'm moving along at a pretty good pace now. Once the horizontal part of the roof is done, I'll move onto the edges which will take me into the sail panels as well.

I'll be extremely happy once the body filler step is done and I can get this part of it into high build primer surfacer.

Thanks for all your comments and support everyone. As always, I really appreciate it. Thanks for checking back.

Great work D and on a personal note being a body man thanks we don't get noted much in this bisness. That roof looks perfect 3 coats of 2k and it will be better than new. What products are you using and planning on using?

Through good luck and good planning...!!!

Ahh that's nothing. The paint will help tighten up the bass on em!

Thanks Eric.
I'm an ex paint and body guy, so I know the lack of respect guys in that industry get.
As for your comment about 3 coats of 2K, that's the plan. I plan on hitting it with 3 coats of high build primer-surfacer when done, and start blocking again in 120 and work my way down.

As for the products I'm using, so far it's 3M Platinum Plus body filler...

...and 3M Platinum Plus finishing glaze:

I'm a fan and firm believer in PPG products, I've used their stuff almost exclusively in the past. I usually use either their Global high build primer surfacer (for solvent based paints), or their EnviroBase stuff for waterborne:

But this time I'm going to try something new. I've used Omni paints before in the past, both single stage and base-clear, but never their primers. This time I'm going to try their version of high build. It's called MP80x, and it can be used as either a primer-surfacer or a sealer depending on mixed ratio. Should still be good quality, but at a little better price point.

Here's the P sheet on it:

I'll be reporting on how I like it, it's ease of sanding, filling properties, etc once I use it. Hopefully it's as high quality as the rest of PPG's stuff.

Thanks for inquiring!
D.

Omni primer & sealers are pretty good products for a lower end line. Used to sell that to alot of shops that used DBC & Concept. Some PPG Platinum supplers sell Shop Line that is more or less Omni. I kinda have a thing for PPG.

Good to know Pagrunt, thanks man!

I obviously kinda have a thing for PPG too. I've had very good success and have been quite happy with their stuff in the past. I've sprayed a lot of DBC over the years and I like it a lot. And I won't use anything but their Concept 2021 clear on anything I do. IMO, it's the nicest, most durable, most "clear" clearcoat out there.

I have heard of the "Shop Line" products, but it wasn't presented to me as an option so I'm not sure if my distributor carries it.

Off topic, but while we're talking, I've seen you supply other members with hard to find and decipher paint codes. Any chance you could find the correct code for Dark Claret for 1980? I want to spray the pinstripes back on rather than use vinyl stick-on crap, so it'd have to be an exterior color, not interior. Is this feasible?

TIA for any help you can provide.

You should be looking for GM/Fisher code 76 Dark Claret Poly, PPG 3212. Painted do look better than tape.

That's fantastic info, thank you! Truly appreciated.
And this should be available as an exterior paint, and not an interior one, correct?
