Rear control arm bracing really needed?

I can get on board the train where the manufacturers are charging a bunch for shiny CNC parts and advertising may have got the better of us, but to suggest that stiffening a spaghetti Gbody Frame is useless or a waste of time is, quite frankly, idiotic.

Many people fail to see that the engineers actually designed flex into the frame, and that flex is responsible for many benefits and downfalls. There is so much flex in the chassis that a lot of stuff will give before it outright fails. This might explain why you dont hear about outright failures. But i'd consider a twisted frame a failure. I bet if you start looking at those figures, they are much more common.

It was acceptable to remove much material and bracing in the late 70's and 80's where the anemic V8's made a whopping 140ish hp and 240ish torque, but just about every Gbody out there now, especially performance versions are pushing many multiples of that.

If you feel comfortable having the rear end propell your car with a little C-Channel shaped sheet metal hook, thats cool, it will probably survive a while. But i also drove around with a separated motor mount for a couple years out in a 300ish hp V8. Doesnt mean its safe/ effective.

People are trying to achieve different things when they stiffen the chassis. For me its taking the flex out of the chassis, so the suspension can do its job. Other people may choose to avoid reinforcement to keep comfort.

I added those braces on my GP along with the jounce bars , GP bar, boxed rear control hotchkis arms uppers and lowers and was going to do square tube braces for the front and rear.... I will admit it handles like it's on rails but it rides STIFF!! lol!

I think a lot of car enthusiasts don't REALLY know what are the true benefits of stiffening your ride, like online170 said some here some there. It all depends on what you want. What it all comes down to is getting certain driving characteristics at peak tire potential. If you have a welder at home it's almost certain you can strengthen the rigidity by welding up weak factory welds and not spend a $ on aftermarket stuff and not just the frame but the body too. A couple of poly bushings and tubular arms and you have a great setup. But if I really was worried about ripping an arm off or a twisted frame I'd put a tubular back half... But thats overboard. You need 800 or more ft lbs of tourqe to worry about that. If that...

I'm not here to argue whether the bracing is needed for a street car or not.I just wanted to throw this out there.

As many people have witnessed we literally try to destroy this car at times whether it's at an auto-x or road course.
Nothing is altered on the frame so it's basically a factory frame with all of our manufactured components on it.

We run roto-joints on the control arms along with all the bracing we offer and have yet to break or crack anything on this car.
I don't have any per say numbers on how much it stiffens up the chassis but i can assure you if we were to take the chassis reinforcement components off this car it would handle in a completely different manner.

I'll go out on a limb here and say if you just street cruise your G-body you very well may not need all the bracing but if your twisting the car up whether it be pounding back roads or at a track it's a good idea to brace what you can on a G-body.

and that picture shows the UMI components are working, the right front tire has perfect camber gain and the left tire is almost off the ground with minimal body roll...we raced G bodys on oval tracks for years and only boxed the c channel and beefed up the factory welds. Those cars bounced off the walls and other cars and never had tore the control arms off the frame

I have spoken with Ramey about setting up oval track late models but setting up a G body with a 4 link rear end for a road course is a whole different ball game. When I was involved with racing a G body it was good on a 1/3 mile track but on a 1/2 mile track with the higher speeds the G body with it's 4 links it could not compete in the corner with the leafed F bodies.

Ok i'll wait and see what you guys come out with next year! I seen the videos of the Green Machine at the track and got excited!! I have plans on upgrading the components on my GP in the near future after I redo my exhaust system and hop up the ls1!!
