here's another link ...this should answer a few questions since it gives the axle length

hmmm 2" difference in axles .... means the complete rear is only 4" bigger overall .... that's a big difference compaired to what I hear. Mighty interesting.

what axles are you looking at?

77-88 MALIBU AXE551818
78-87 EL CAMINO, GMC SPRINT AXE551818
28 7/16”
vs.
80-92 IMPALA DRUM BRAKES AXE22506477
30 1/2”
or
82-83 CADILLAC COUPE DE VILLE AXE22504959
30 1/2”
or
88-89 CADILLAC FLEETWOOD AXE22504959
30 1/2”
I know I know the Caddies aint Bs They are C or D body - I honestly forget but length of frame is the difference, as I recall.

I'm pretty sure axle flange (not housing flange) width on a G-Body is 58 1/8", or close to it. Even if a B-Body rear is 6" wider, that's only 3" of backspacing per side, which can typically be taken care of with a 0-offset type wheel. I'm not sure when you would start having interference with the wheelwell lips though... you'll eventually get to a width at some point where backspacing wouldn't help in that area at all.

Just to add more info and make it more cinfusing, lol. I had put an 8.5 out of a cop car in my 87 caprice to replace the 7.5. The 8.5 also came from an early 80's caprice. It will have the larger 5 on 5 lug spacing. To fix this I used axles out of a late 2nd gen f-body. Close enough in lenght and has the 5 on 4.75 lug pattern. I know it's not a big issue but if your hitting the junkyard anyhow...

I probably would have just swapped out rims and rotors, run the 5 x5 but that's my $.02.

Well you guys definetly lost me lol, I know nothing about anything you guys were saying

I'm just trying to see what would be good for a 350 ish HP drivetrain and 22" wheels. Not racing just cruising.

Have you tried Walmart? They sell lots of car parts and will probably give you a good deal if you are nice and polite to them, Not as quite a hassle as you thought, right? good luck and I'd like to help any time I can. Just the kinda guy I am. 😀

I say steerible 5 ton military axles front and rear.
