Supposedly out of a late 70's monte carlo . Is there any issues with this rear working in my 86 carlo ?

For an A body rear you want a Chevelle 64 to 72. The 64 - 67 A body rear is 2.5" wider than a G body rear, the 68 - 72 A body rear is 4.5" wider than the G body rear.

Ill have close to 350 hp. But yeah ive thought about that, ive never worked on a differential , except for the basics. This is a budget build after the money i put in the th350. Id like to swap whole rear but idk, ill decide after i get engine and trans installed. Thanks

I think you would be surprised how easy a dif is to work on. An A body rear might be cheap but will probably require new rims and arms and shortening your drive shaft. You could use that Z rear end and buy new axles or find some used. There is always the ford 8.8 or 9 in all not cheap. Your most economical route is to find a 7.5 posi rear, they use to be cheap but are drying up, or buy a used posi for yours (no gov lock- watch carrier size). 350HP is starting to push the 7.5 and your talking about parts over 30 years old.

Actually its out of a 76 monte , its 61" wide. Prob too wide for my 86, i gotta measure mine so i know exactly what i got

if it is a 61" rear that is 3" wider than the G body 58" rear. You should check the bolt pattern for the wheels, it may be a 5x5

I'd bet that 61" is backing plate to backing plate, not WMS to WMS

Surely if it was only ~3" wider than a G body, they'd be a lot more popular swap than they are, even with the mounting ear differences. 73-77 axles were always everywhere for cheap
