Small block Chevy engine GUNK cleaning

On a stand I would not bother with the trans fluid. Only if you run it as-is you can start breaking down some of the crud with a high detergent oil.
Typically 4:1 Oil to trans fluid
Pop the pan, check the pickup, the bearings, the ridge in the cylinders and decide if its worth running as-is. Play the " since its out game " and take it 1 step further to tank it and re-ring it with fresh seals and bearings.

So if I run the engine on a engine stand how much trans fluid should I put in it and should I mix it with oil?THANKS

why would you do that? If you are switching heads and the pump then the sludge that is in the current heads and oil pan won't be there when you put the new heads on and the pan can be cleaned before installing it after you change the oil pump. You can clean the valley when the intake and pan are removed. Also any sludge in the timing chain area can be cleaned when you change the chain. I would clean the engine before you remove the heads, pan and timing chain cover

I know here in Toronto it was $500 - $ 600 plus parts to tear down, tank, re-ring and bearing a SBC short block after a camshaft failure. A Gasket ring and bearing set is appx $100

It's out of the car now is the time to go through it and you'll know what you have. As stated a re-ring kit is cheap (under $100 @ Northern auto)
You will probably need cam & lifters too. Don't want to spend any $$ , put it in as Driven said.

the engine on my wagon was LOADED with crud - watch this vid - after scraping, brushing and washing out I ran ATF through the system, cut open the filter, did it again, then filled with oil. it's in the wagon now, runs smooth as silk, burns no oil and gets 21mpg HWY (it's a TBI car). hope this helps
