i would drive it firing on 7 cyls... seriously.. my cam had 2 lobes wore off... and i drove it for 3 months.. and it want that bad at all.

you have a bad ground in the coil of your new distributor. Take the coil off the cap and ground it correctly to its original location... the ground wire should be easy enough to find. Check other wiring inside the coil cap to make sure it checks out.

-This is dumb, but double check the distributor and cap to make sure its firing on the correct cylinders, who knows it may be something simple like that.

But.. is your mechanical problem fixed? I wouldn't run it at all until that problem is out of the way. Do you have the locking rocker types?-With the allen head in the middle, or just regular rockers?

Actually Custom442, when i took the top of the cap off to plug in the sparkplug wires the ground wire came lose! And it looks like it goes around the screw that holds the top of the cap on, it has a little eye hole at the end, but i'm not 100% sure, and yes it was firing to the right cylinders, i'm going to give it another go today and see if i can get it working right.

And as for the long trip, i have no choice :/, I'm in south Carolina right now and I've been laid off of my main job and I'm riding on my secondary to get up the money to get my car into running shape so i can get back to PA where my close friends are until i can get back on my feet, I'm pretty much on my own down here so it's really my only choice, I've got my back against the wall on this one.

As for the rocker arms, they're your averaged stock regular rocker arms, and im going to double check again today to see if the lifters are lifting to determine whether its the rocker arm studs or the cam itself.

My plan is to get this engine into the best shape i can to make this drive, The bottom end is all aftermarket, even the block, so I'm not worried about it at all. The transmission is a 700R4 rebuilt for racing with a brand new mass flow valve body. With the new distributor plugs and wires + hopefully a new intake manifold and carb i'll be able to make it to PA just fine, hopefully.

Btw, does anybody know what the timing should be for my engine, i think its 6 dagrees BTDC right?

I would definitely get the lifter/rocker problem solved before anything else. Driving that far on a dead cylinder is not good for the engine, or gas mileage. It may make the trip, but you will use alot more gas.

If your going to be installing a new intake you can check out and replace if necessary the lifters and/or the push rods.....

I know what it's like to have my back up against the wall so good luck and although these engines never seem to run as good as they should they always seem to get us wherever we need to go....also you might want to check to see if there's any gbody guys around where your headed. I know if I was close to you and you needed a hand I'd be glad to help you out and I'm sure there other members out there that would do the same...

The amount of money you will waste on gas, and not to mention the fact that you could break down on the way. Plus the cost of the possible damages from driving it like that.....

I would check into what it would cost to have your car transported. Because if you do break down on the way, it's gonna cost you a LOT of cash. I reccomend you play it safe. Don't wanna damage that bottom end.

I'm just paranoid because I have made many trips like you are about to, and with a damaged engine. And most of the time I broke down, and had to pay out of my *ss to get myself back to where I was before the trip. If you do decide to make the trip I wish you the best of luck. Who knows, you could make it problem free. You just never know.

As far as it goes, I would not drive it that far for the above reasons. Having broken down in a working car on the trip from New York to Florida, I can say it's no fun at all. Now, I had all the tools to make the repairs myself, but doing so on the road was still difficult.

Right now I'm kind've lost for words, it seems like an all up hill battle with this car.

So i took everyone's advice and i was on my way to my friends shop to try and solve the lifter problem, and on the way over my car dies suddenly, very suddenly. It started to idle very very low and was un-responsive to me giving it gas, it back fired twice and died out. And now it won't even turn over, i get absolutely no Ignition, nothing. When i turn the key it acts like the battery isn't hooked up, my check engine light doesn't even come on like it used to, not even the beep sound when the key was in the on position, i tried replacing all the fuses and the one relay in the fuse box, nothing.

I'm totaly clueless at this point as to what the hell happened, i know my alternator was on its way to going bad, and i just installed a new pully kit, the no-slip gilmer style pully's, could my alternator have fried something??

I know im getting power because my interior lights work and so do my headlights, but even with the key in the ON position when i turn on the headlights it still makes the warning sound as if it doesn't know the key is in the ignition.

I really have no idea what happened or why its doing this, I've been brain storming on it, my wiring harness in the front end is in pretty poor shape but its been like that for awhile, like i said i replaced every last fuse and the only relay my car has in the fuse box, i can't figure out why i lost ignition :?

Any idea's?
