Re: Cutlass on a budget build thread

Loving the speaker pods!! Liking the build in general. This reminds me of my car. I got my car at 17 and boy, I have put some sweat and blood into it, and I still love my car.
8) Awesome build though!!

Thanks guys! And Yep! It's my pride and joy! Next up I am going to install a digital voltage meter in the factory cluster. Then maybe a 2400 stall if funds allow.

Re: Cutlass on a budget build thread

Made some more progress on the Cutty. Started its first body work! I sanded down the panel that fills the gap between the rear window and trunk lid. Started with 180 on a DA, then the first coat of primer, and then 320 by hand and another coat of primer. Also sanded the rust on the back by hand with 80 and primed it.

Also started work on making pods to relocate my 6x9's to the back seat arm rests. I'll be glassing them, but I got a little bit of a head start with 2 plastic frames my dad grabbed from work. Also had the board laying around in the garage.

And here's a little bonus of what it sounds like in the cold weather! 8)

Re: Cutlass on a budget build thread

Oh man. I had no idea 6x9's would fit the rear armrest area and now I'm stoked to see how that goes for you. Could you take some measurements so I can try to do something similar? I would really appreciate it bc I have some 6x9's I got as a gift just chilling on a shelf here. If the whole thing works out for you I am going to copy it asap. BTW, I would suggest putting some sound deadening material or at least blocking the speaker in w electrical tape before screwing it in. In the event of a crash, if the rear of the speaker touches metal it could short out the whole system and put your amp/ head unit @ risk of blowing out. Just a heads up, I doubt the back of the speaker will come close to the metal unless it's a wierd off-brand speaker. I had to duct tape the metal rods in my back seat together so they wouldn't vibrate & so my 6x9's wouldn't touch the rods and short out my radio, which did occur over large bumps before I blocked it w/ tape^ just a heads up.

They are gonna be in their own separate fiberglass pods, so the magnet will never come close to the inside of the quarter. The only problem I am having is that with the panel sliding into the slot, I can't attach the speaker pod to it. So I'm a little lost there. Anyways, thanks for the love guys!

Re: Cutlass on a budget build thread

Alrighty, here is the next update. I've scrapped the first idea on the 6x9 pods with the plastic frames. I just didn't like how they were going to turn out. So i decided to make some rings out of MDF and start all over. So here is the updated progress.

Here is what the recessed ring looks like. One of my first times using a jigsaw, so I know it might look a little rough. I think these look better because the frame of the speaker will never stick out past the pods.

I needed about 2-5/8" of clearance, so I made some MDF blocks 2-1/4" tall.

Finished frame, and in the car.

Wrapped in fleece, looks damn good to me! Only thing is I need to make to top edge of the pod flat, so that it will slide into the sail panels nicely. So I'm not going to be hacking up the panels or the car to get these to fit.

So I tried to staple down the edge without ripping the fleece, then put on some resin. A little on the back too, to hold the fleece down better. I guess I will see how this turned out when it dries.

Also put in an OnStar mirror my dad had in the garage. I would like to plastidip the buttons and maybe wire up the buttons to something in the car. Any ideas?

Re: Cutlass on a budget build thread

Wire a button up as the dome light switch who wants to reach back and find the ugly little black thing when they are trying to drive. I never used my dome light when I was trying to drive bc too dangerous I always had to wait til I was pulled over lol
