STUCK IN FULL THROTTLE!

Just like the title says, every now and then when I punch it the car will get stuck in full throttle and I'll have to use my e-brake, switch to Neutral, and keep my brakes slammed until I can navigate somewhere safely to stop. For a while it went away when I replaced the throttle return spring, which good god it needed, but then about 6 weeks after I punched it and the throttle got stuck again. Every time this would happen I would have to remove the air filter, pull the throttle some and it would retract to its closed position. I'm learning bits and pieces here and there, but what can I do to keep this from ever happening again, and save my own life as well as the Cutty's.
Car is a 1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme
307 VIN Y V8
stock Rochester 4bbl quadrajet carburetor, no longer CCC, i guess its just electric now that there's no computer?
the 307 is already a dog, I wanna at least be able to punch it without the potential of crashing!!! 😛
 
i would certainly replace the throttle cable if theres any signs of it jaming. serious safety issue. i wouldn't even drive it until it's sorted out

could be carb itself i would disconnect the throttle linkage and see what seems to be jaming
 
WOW! Are you sure you are not driving a Toyota Prius?

x2.....I don't know why you would have driven the car after it happened the first time without making sure the problem was corrected...
 
dunno how your air cleaner is set up, but make sure that your oil breather tube is as far back as it will go. rotate the air cleaner counter-clockwise. The throttle can get hung up on that grommet on the underside of the cleaner. ask me how I know. :roll:

X2. Twice now I've had a throttle cable stick on my. The problem is that the cable is made up of stainless braided cable inside a teflon sheath. The individual wires of the cable wear and break, with the resulting sharp ends getting stuck inside the sheath. As noted, the easy test is to simply disconnect the cable from the carb and see if it moves back and forth smoothly. Do the same check on your throttle valve cable.
 
pull the air cleaner so you can see, then disconnect the throttle. go to WOT by hand a few times and see if it sticks. also see if the throttle arm or rod have play in them.
 
hey everybody, thanks for all the responses and tips. I actually spent all day cleaning up the engine bay, deleting the A/C compressor, smog pump, and cruise control, so I will definitely check out the carb and snap some photos. Thanks again you guys it means a lot

Heres just a shot in the mechanical dark....I had a 68 olds delta 88 that my dad let me borrow a few times to go on a trip here and there and it would do the same thing. Turns out...it was a broken left side motor mount that would allow the motor to move enough to cause the cable to bind slightly for a few tense moments...took us a major minute to figure it out :shock:
