Small block Chevy is probably the cheapest,IMO. How about a Poncho 400?

If the distributor is in the front, you have a 231 Buick V6. A Buick 350 (also distributor in front) is literally a drop in swap. Same mounts, wiring (might have to elongate some wires), starter, water pump, fuel pump, bracketry, etc. Fits nice too. If it has a distributor in the back, just plop a chevy 350 in it. Personally I'd go pontiac. 350, 400, 455, you're pick.

I was like you once. I removed my Grand Prix's V6 and swapped in a big block 454 Chevy. Even with my stock iron heads, I quadrupled my car's horsepower.

Go big or go home!

Cheapest and easiest would be a Chevy 350.

Plenty of power for the money.

But a 400 or 455 Pontiac would be sweeeeet!

A Pontiac engine would be nice if you can find a good running one otherwise on a budget the SBC will be the best bang for the buck and is still available as a new crate engine with a warranty.

350 Chevrolet - Good
400 Pontiac - Better
455 Anything - Amazing

in 87, (not sure about other years), the only gas powered v-8 offered was a small block chevy 305... if you could find someone parting one out, you could have a one-stop shop from mounts to carb, with a fairly simple drop-in...
