BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

This has to be the most insane G body I have ever seen, it is even better than the OldsFEX build, his took like 10 years. This is the only I would actually splurge for something like the Stainless and expensive in frame, long tube American Racing headers. Awesome as always, my 70S is driving me nuts being in pieces, couldn't imagine this🙂.
Definitely agree! My cutlass has been down for 5 years now and it's killing me. I think that's why Donovan bought "Olds Cool" so that he could keep withdrawals somewhat maintained, and have a G to drive while transforming the 'Naut.

Great work as usual Donovan! Thanks for the update!

As always Donovan, your updates are well written and thorough, something mine got away from. I blame that on doing it from my phone, 😉. In any case, taking your time and thinking things through, are paying off. Though sometimes you have to do things twice, and I know that feeling all too well.

Donovan,
As always, my friend, your high level of workmanship just blows me away.
Your extreme detail...What more can I say??
Scott nailed it by calling you "Mr. Riddler". 😀

That's no joke Jack! If only I had that level of patience and skill i would be thrilled!

To Mr. Riddler....upon completion of the 'Naut if you don't at least consider trying to enter such a prestigous custom car competition....we all might come give ya a good tail kickin 😉!!!

In all seriousness, i would even take the time to assemble a list of pics and overview of the 'Naut and enter it for you, and that's no joke!

I had mine down for a year, any longer and it would have been towed away🙂.

Great work as always Donovan. You have a lot more patience than I do. Lol. Looks like it's time for someone to buy a GoPro! Lol

Every time I see one of your updates I'm amazed at how clean that car is. I guess that's what you get with a frame off and a long term project of this magnitude.

So, you've got the sensors mounted and working well.... What's next?

Thank you Opie.
As far as the patience thing is concerned, I'm not sure if I have any more or less than anybody else. There's times I just can't commit the concentration and attention to detail that a particular project requires. I've learned to leave it and come back to it another time when that happens.

I'll give the GoPro notion a little more thought... I've briefly considered it in the past, but always thought the money could be made better use of elsewhere.

Yeah, I suppose the car is pretty clean as compared to the condition of a lot of remaining G's out there, but keep in mind I had already restored the car once previous to this. After it's first restoration, it led a pretty sheltered life, garaged, and constantly shined, waxed, and fussed over forever after that. The only abuse it would take was the occasional aggressive street race, or flogging it in the local quarter mile on race nights.

What's next?
Glad you asked, It's gonna be a busy spring and summer for me.

I'm going to take a bit of a breather from The 'Naut here for a bit, and concentrate on Olds Cool as the warmer weather is steering my thoughts to getting back out on the open road.

The immediate plan is to mask and repaint the aluminum '80 442 wheels I have for it, and get the "like new" BFG radial T/A's I picked up last year mounted and balanced on 'em. The 442 wheels will go on Olds Cool to replace the dull and boring rallies and shitty tires that are currently on it.

After that, work will continue on Olds Cool as the vinyl roof that's on it is shot and making the rest of the car look shabby. The vinyl roof and related trim will be changed out in favour of converting it to a hardtop.

I already know there's some rust repair to do once the vinyl's gone, so there's that, and of course the bodywork and paint that go along with it. You can expect to see both quarters, the sail panels, the entire roof, "A" pillars, and possibly even the hood to get repainted all at the same time. And yes, I'll be tackling all of that myself.
I have something a bit special in mind when it comes to the paint, but I'm not gonna give too much away on that just yet. Let's just say it's going to be "retro/OEM inspired".
😉

In previous years, come spring and summer time, I'd usually suspend work on The 'Naut, but I don't think I'm going to do that this year. I'm really starting to feel the crush of time on The 'Naut, as of next year it'll be 10 years since it last saw asphalt under its tires. Time to up my game and start putting in as much time as I can on it, including summers if need be.

If all goes well and I get Olds Cool painted and back on the road in a reasonable amount of time, I'll either look at restoring and repainting the Camaro wheels I picked up last weekend, or jump directly back onto The Juggernaut.
When I do get back on The 'Naut, it'll be back bodyworking the hood, as I'm still dedicated to completing it and knocking it off the list.

Whew!
THAT was a lot of info! I didn't think the reply to your post was gonna be so long! Anyways, thanks again for the comments on the update. Greatly appreciated man.

Holy crap your work is amazing. Your attention to detail is meticulous.

Amazing just amazing.

Nice work!!

Thank you!
My nature is to be meticulous in almost every thing I do, but for the ride height sensors especially, I had to make sure that everything was just right. Any discrepancy or differences in my measurements from side to side or corner to corner would've resulted in the sensors not reading correctly and that would've presented me with a whole host of new problems, so it was especially important to "get it right" on this one.

Thanks for the high praise and feedback!

So clean! Thanks Donovan for spending the time to put together such a thorough update. I really enjoyed it.

You're welcome Jared, and thank YOU for the kind words.
It's my pleasure, especially when I get nothing but positive comments afterwards. You guys and your reactions are my gauge to whether or not I hit the mark. I have a feeling that if I ever did something sub-par, you guys would let me know in a hurry!

Wow, don't let Andrew (FEXClone) hear you say that!
Lol
Actually, Andrew's car was a source of inspiration and a reference for me quite a few times, especially when it came to figuring out how to adapt the T56 to the 455. Much respect and inspiration on The Juggernaut is due to his build.

Stay with it on your '70, it'll get there!

Thanks for the feedback and for checking in on the progress!

This. ^^^
Scott nailed it, after 7 or 8 years of not driving a G body, the urge finally got the best of me, and I simply HAD to have another!

As a fun thought for in the future, if I continue to keep Olds Cool stock appearing as I plan to, I can park both cars side by side at a show and tell them:

"These are both the same car. They're both the exact same year, make, and model."

Then just sit back and watch their heads explode when they try and grasp how these two cars that look so radically different could possibly have ever looked and been the same!
😀

Great work as usual Donovan! Thanks for the update!

Thank you Kevin!
Always nice to hear from you, and appreciate the comments. You guys are the best!

Appreciate it Jim. Nice to hear from ya, it's been a while!
The updates do tend to take some time to compile, I find the difficult part is to explain what the hell I did, and why, without writing a damn novel. As you can see, I ain't very good at that yet! I need to find a way to still get the info across, but in a less lengthy post (or posts!)
Thanks for stopping in and checking it out!

Jack, what can I say?
You always have something nice to say, and I appreciate the positive comments you always have for me. I'm glad guys like you can appreciate the effort and work that goes into projects like this, it's an honour to be judged by my peers and receive nothing but thumbs up.

Very grateful for your compliments and praise. Thank you.

Hoo boy!
That's some pretty heady stuff right there...

I'm EXTREMELY flattered that y'all think this thing might be Riddler worthy some day, but I don't want to even entertain that thought. At least not just yet. I mean hell, I'm still just in the mockup stage, the whole thing has to come apart again for the paint n polish n shiney bits yet.

I'm not going to positively rule anything out at this point, but that's a pretty lofty goal. Let's just see how I continue to make out in the future.
When the car IS finally completed, I do want the car to be judged, but I'll start out small. Enter it in the local World of Wheels show, see how it does. Then maybe consider entering it in a larger regional show. Then possibly SEMA, if they'd have me. Etc etc.

I'm not saying it'll never happen, I'll just have to start out small first.
Thank you Scott, I swear, I'm gonna make you my personal PR man for the car! Hell, I think you may be already...
😉
