That's timing then, it's either to far advanced or needs retarded I'm not forsure I've had that happen before and it was just timing, it would rev up great in the driveway but was soon as you put in in drive it wood just run like crap and had know power, it almost felt like the carb was just to big, do you have a timing light? We can help you out if you do and if you don't we can still help with it lol

No I dont have a timing light.. I took it to a local mechanic to put my lock up kit put in and the HEI timed... I had timed it myself but he messed it up worse... I was looking for the hash on the balancer on the crank but couldnt find it. He said he used a timing light... I dont believe him... and yeah like you said. It just runs like crap now. Without a timing light what do I do? Would it be a good idea to purchase one? or can this be done and done right without one

You got to have all that stuff calibrated now someone with a timing light but your not going to be setting it to stock timing any more. the idle mixture screws on the edelbrock do make a difference from like o to 40. Now I know I am going to get flamed for this but This is for testing purposes only to get a better understanding of the problems start the car turn the distributor to the point in which you get the highest idle then back off just a smidget. Now lightly screw the idle screws on that edelbrock all the way in then go 1 and 1/4 turns out so 360 plus 90 degrees then go in or out 1/8 turns until you get the highest idle now set your idle down where it is supposed to be and see if that works if it gets alot better you have some tuning issues and need to have the car setup by someone who knows what they are doing.

Ok I will try that.. I have never been good at timing. I just have to find someone who knows how to time/tune it. Just a question when you say tuning issues your referring to the timing problem right :?:

Yes I am talking about timing and and the carb they both make a big difference.

You can do it without a timing light but it's not goin to be perfect, when the car is warm is it hard to start back up after you turn the car off? Does it seem like a dead battery or just hesitates alittle

Like the battery is dead... like its not getting enough power

admittedly i only glanced through the thread, but nowhere did i see that you tried to tune the carb. and i mean much more than just the idle screws. there's also the float level, accelerator pump, jets...

remember, every adjustment to the carb affects timing and every timing adjustment affects the carb.
also, you might need a different spark plug heat range, but you'll find that out after you get it tuned up.

I did the carb and intake and dis. I order all my parts from a local speed shop. Me and the owner are good buddys. Since I live in colorado the carb had to be set. he did the floats and the jet... and everything else b4 I got the carb so It wud b ready to get on the car. My fuel pressure was low and I figured that also could be the cause, so I checked it and the line from the tank seems to have a split somewhere becuz its just pulling air and not gas so Its acutally gettin new fuel lines are we speak... also wen I ordered my intake he gave me pre 86 intake which means the 8 center bolts are angled different then my heads on there now. So I only have the outter 8 bolts in, But im either gonna get another intake or change my heads to pre 86 350 heads to help flow... also wen I started my car sometimes smoke wud or steam wud come from under the carb and the neck of the intake... I have an adapter but its more like a gasket from spread bore to square bore. Shud I purchase a plate to replace the gasket?

before you do anything else find a new "friend" and a different speed shop

he should have known what intake you needed and just a plain gasket is not good enough
