This is an auburn differential..you may have an open rear end so you wouldn't have the springs or the retainer. It shows the pinion shaft and lock screw (I called it a pin) I was talking about..

Gonna' have to remove the axle shaft whether or not I want to or not. Need it out of the way so I can drill out/re-tap where the lower 2 small bolts twisted off. I even pre-soaked them periodically over a 3 day span with PB Blast...... :wtf: My Chiltons' talks about C- Locks and mentions stuff about an oil seal, using a bearing puller behind the bearing. Seat the washer against the bearing/secure with nut and use a slide hammer to pull the bearing.... ect... ect.... I don't have to be concerned with all that just to remove the axle shafts do I? Thanks everybody for the help.... Mike

For those lower bolts just drill them out and use a 3/8 bolt and nut. The bolts that they use are metric so the replacement bolts would be over priced just like the tap would be.

the c-clips have to be removed to pull the axles...the bearings and axle seal do not need to be replaced just for taking out the axles. If you do want to change the axle seals just use the nose of the axle where the c clip is installed to pry the old seal out

I will get back at'er tomorrow and see what i got. Chiltons' talks also about "Non C-Lock" also. Have to investigate further to see what I have before I can proceed. Today is Beer, Wings(compliments to the wife) & watchin' a nail-bighter Mich/OSU game! Go Blue........ Thanks again for the help! Get under her tomorrow and see what I have.........

it may sound complicated but once you look at it you'll see it's pretty straight forward. Enjoy the beer. wings and the game..

Thanks to the forums' and books I have succeeded many times and plan to do so again. Just wanna' do my homework before I mess with the "Rear" Wish I had the knowledge to throw in new gears! 231/V6 NA slow as a monkey's uncle :wtf:

pulling axles is easy. it's actually the first job i ever did. the only important thing is to never rotate the gears without the center shaft in place.

Or break the Lockscrew that hold the pinion shaft. If you bust if off in the Differential Case you are hosed..I have only none a few people that were are to easy out the busted lockscrew..Also when you slide the axles out after you fished the C clip out of the carrier and side gears, don't drag the axles on the axle shaft seals unless you are going to replace them, you could ruin the lips if you do..and don't for get to use loc-tite on the lockscrew when you install it...Good Luck..

Work, side work weekends, damn house maintenance, family ect... ect... ect... has me on hold for now. I have all winter/before the weather breaks to get the Regal done. I am anxious to get'er done winter or not! Thanks to all for the Input and I will post up when I dive back in! Maybe next week or maybe January/Feb Thanks, Mike. Regardless- She Will Be On the road come spring. Cardomain has her in her former glory if interested...... Thanks again for all the input!

You just have to remove the pinion shaft to get the axles out...remove the pin, use a 5/16 6 point to remove the pin, not a 12 point (it will round it off). You'll have to remove one cap so mark it to make sure it goes back on the same way it came off. The turn the housing 180* so you can tap the pinion shaft out about an inch and then turn the carrier 180* so you can use the pin to help you get the shaft out. The push the axles in and and remove the C clips..
For the pin/lockscrew 5/16 is too big an 1/4 inch too small. > 8mm seems the closest, but still loose. 7mm too small. Looks like I need a 7.5mm wrench.

I will hit the hardware stores tomorrow and see what I can find. I already have a 5.5 and 6.5mm so I know they sell half-mm sizes but when I called Sears they said they don't carry half sizes :wtf: . Obviously craftsman makes em' cause I have 2/half size mm(5.5/6.5). made my Craftsman in my tool box. I just don't have the 7.5 so I hope I can find one cause I will not risk rounding off the pin/lockscrew. <That would suck! I wish I could find a wrecked GN in N.W. Ohio. I came this far just to replace the Damn backing plates, wish I had the money and just swap out the whole entire freaken' rear-axle and call it a day.....
