that pinion bolt is an american size i believe

ya 9/32

i didn't say beat, i said tap. and to use the SLIGHTLY smaller wrench.
and again, this worked EVERY time. it also worked for ALL of the other mechanics at the shop. matter of fact, it was taught to me by one with 30yrs experience.
the bolts are only threaded at the top, so what often happens is that snapping it, also finishes loosening it. then a pick or screwdriver can get it the rest of the way out.

I'm sure it can be done as you stated. ?? I just would think by doing that you would strip the hex head on the locksrew?? Once you got it out and did your work, did you replace it with a new one then when putting it back together???

Back from the store: Couldn't find a 9/32 wrench(at Meanard's) for the life of me. Bought a cheap set of 6 point sockets(9/32 included) just to track down the right size. 9/32 is to small.

I should of listened to "PontiacGP" Yesterday I tried my 5/16 -12pt and open ended wrench(don't have a 6pt.) and said to myself this isn't even close. A 6 pt won't work! Mikey was wrong again! The 6 pt. socket set I bought has a 5/16 and it's the one. Except I cant get in there with ratchet attached to the socket. So like PontiacGp said: You need a 5/16- 6pt. wrench. Not going back out today tho. X-mass shoppers created a traffic nightmare...... I'll check with my neighbor if he's home and see what I can do...

Thanks again for everyone's help and patience..... Mike

look for a brake bleeder wrench, it's a 6 point with a 5/16 on one side and 3/8 on the other...or with the carrier cap off and a small extension or a long socket you can should be able to get a 1/4 drive ratchet in there

Carrier cap: I think I know what you mean. it's the only thing in my way as far as getting a ratchet in there. Larger U or C shaped. One on each side of the Rear-end/2 of them. 2 bolts hold each on in place(top and bottom) Didn't check earlier but if my memory serves me, maybe by 1/2 bolts? Is that the carrier cap?
