Is that some of your required reading?Started reading another 100 pages on Rommel. That man really kept a great personal account of his work in WWII.

If it is just for casual interest, and you can find time for another book, you might also like Jimmy Doolittle's autobiography "I could never be so lucky again".
From the far more limited reading I've done just as a wwii and history interest I'm guessing the maniac side is a strange appreciation for his tactical mind?Work, my dude. At staff college we are studying "Command". I chose this maniac as the topic for my 4000 word paper.
I appreciate the recommendation.

As a man he participated in the assassination plot so it shows a dedication to country over the insane ideology, knowing the risks. Had he been lesser genius and national hero he wouldn't have gotten that suicide offer which, given the environment, was incredibly lucky for his family.
Dude was zip-zapping all over the battlefield. Bumps into British troops in his captured booty mobile "the Mammoth" because they didn't see the German insignia. Tells the Italian High Command to EAD. And rolls around with mascot chickens.
He was crazy as hell.
And yet in all of the irony, he had two of those things he used IIRC. Could've been more but I remember reading about two. One was named innocuous enough with Max. But the other one he used was named Moritz... which was a name referring to being "dark skinned."Dude was zip-zapping all over the battlefield. Given the political climate and where things were socially headed, a strange choice of name by someone who would've been paid particular notice to.
He loved the spoils of war, and using it to his advantage. The Italians were worthless in his view and German High Command didn't particularly care for the region's strategic value. Rommel was just there to prop up the Italians, and was resources accordingly. So anything he could get his hands on became a tool in achieving his personal agenda.
