Boltholes are blind, as far as I can tell the backsides are crack free.

I have been thinking about your problem. How thin is your gasket compared to the first one you had? It is possible your thermostat is thicker than the alowed counter bore and gasket. Might seal at first, but after it expands and contracts it is not enough. Double gaskets or a thicker one may fix the problem. Food for thought!

Not a clue ebay 5 buxx. searched Oldsmobile rocket emblem.

After looking through 74,547,383,899,464 results i found one I liked.

I peeled off all the wood grain veneer then cleaned the glue off with

and plastic razor blades.

This is a water based product so it will not harm the interior plastics or any painted surfaces.

it is used to remove vinyl wraps.

Sprayed with SEM landau black and then clear coated with a semi gloss.

I will double face tape the emblem on once the vent is installed.

Standard felpro-type gasket thickness. Bout as thick as a dime. I dont think they make em any thicker. If new gasket and housing plus rtv doesnt work then i might try double gaskets. Thermostat fits in the groove snugly and flat.

I will mention... The only gasket i could get on short notice was one of the adhesive ones. With or without the new housing, i think that would present an issue. This most recent time is the 1st with the new housing and only time an adhesive gasket was used. I like the blue felpro gaskets the best, as probably do many of you, but the store ran out. So i got stuck with the adhesive.

Have you tried using "The Right Stuff" from permatex? It's designed so you can return it to service immediately and I've never had it leak.

It's too bad you aren't close, we use "crack detector" basically you spray a red compound on, let it dry, then spray over it with a white compound, makes it easy to see cracks. We use it on equipment fames and drill towers. Maybe spray some paint on the intake surface, let it dry then wipe it down with acetone or laquer thinner sparingly on a rag? Might penetrate a hairline crack and let you see what the naked eye can't.
