The nut that holds the front of the driver's window to the bottom window track came off. Pulled it apart and fixed it and also checked out everything else inside there to be sure everything is good. While I was at it, I put some sound deadener on the door skin. I'll need to sound deaden the passenger door next.

john 87442, by all means do ask your builder if he has heard of, or encountered, this issue. My source for this was my indie speed shop's owner; he is a builder but not at the commercial level. What he is into is race motors for the circle track and drag strip afficianados. Was by the site of one commercial engine rebuild shop recently, in passing, and if appears to be closed as in CLOSED. The owner there was the son of the original owner but thinking his kids may not have wanted to become entrepreneurs in that genre.

For myself I would like to know simply because I have a 400 SBC project mill that I am slowly gathering parts for and if cam lifters are going to be a problem I might just have to head for a dead yard I know of and see if they have a hulk or two they will let go of for parts.

Also hoping that anyone else who has heard of this will chime in with what they have learned.

Thanks Nick I’m going to follow up with him tomorrow and see what he says, this is good information. A lot of us only have the funds to do this one time so it really sucks if you build an engine that is garbage from the start.

Ok so I have only had a day in the last couple of weeks to work on this but finally have both a pillars replaced along with the t top header panel. Welded in and all ground down. Put the window back in to check the fit and to my surprise it looks great, just goes to show you determination wins. I know nothing about doing this stuff but to dumb to realize that so I watch some videos and jump in until it’s a point of no return. It’s actually really strong. The bottom of the a pillars on both sides were totally gone so a little fab work that is in no way perfect but is strong and will hold the hood hinge bolt just fine. And as for my welds …. Well on a foggy night on horseback they’ll look great! Seriously though after grinding they’re fine… not pretty but good penetration. Best point I saved a bunch doing it myself…. Next is removing the floor pan and a bunch more fab before I can put this new pan in.

Well, there's an idea for a new service - put some sacrificial junkyard mules on stands and use them to break in matched sets of cams and lifters before guys do the swaps/builds.

Weeds out weak components without sending debris through the whole engine.

Off the record, the service rep with whom he was speaking guesstimated that there are as many as 30.000+ faulty lifters out in the retail sector. How come? The quality control of the off shore mfgr, (or MFR if you prefer) took a monumental dump and a major number of lifters were passed that had not been properly hardened....

Roller lifters? Same basic source, same set of issues. Moral? Parts is parts; hang on to your parts.
Holy shiitake mushrooms Batman, anyone who wants to do a new build seems to be fawked. I'm having a 455 with a roller redone at the moment, but the Crane roller cam and lifters I had in it are fine so will be reused. Maybe this will be the last Olds I'm building anyway...

regarding the lifter issue, here's a recent thread from elsewhere. they seem to be pointing the finger at non-roller lifters

That's why I hang onto the good hard parts of stuff like that. T56 6spd Manual parts I have a solid stash, LS Engine parts including a set of low mileage LS7 Lifters as a spare for anything..tons of sensors..etc.

86Lk is right about which way the finger is being pointed, and that was the primary point that my shop guy was making to me. Just me here being the messenger and hoping not to get dogpiled just because the message isn't all cuddly puppies and everlasting rainbows.

I wonder how many years back this came about. I bought my Edelbrock boxed lifters back in '17/'18 & haven't broke in the cam yet. Hate to do a tear down just to convert to a roller set up just to save everything else from suicidal lifters.
