I took my 1978 Delta 88 Holiday coupe out for a long cruise this morning. I just had the headliner and sun visors re-done recently at a local shop. They came out great. No more sagging material sitting on my head. Plus, I added a SunPro mini tach. I've been curious to see what rpm's the 403 V8 turns as I cruise around, especially on the highway. It's got 3.23's from the factory. 65 mph is about 3000 rpm. I kind of figured that. My 1979 Hurst used to spin at 2500 rpm with the original 2.73's and at 3400 rpm with the 3.73's that are in it now. Makes sense that the 3.23's are in the middle.
The original 2.73 posi rear is going back in my Hurst soon to replace the 8.5 inch 3.73 posi that's currently there. I took the 455 out last year and replaced it with a stock 350 and just need to swap the rear end to go back to stock completely. The car was more drivable in the stock configuration. Besides, my daily driver 2016 Dodge Charger R/T with the Super Track Pack option fills my need for performance.

Dropped the oil pan to change the oil pump pickup (and pump, it's cheaper than buying the tube separately), since these VW 1.8 Turbo engines are notorious for sludge and have a stupidly small oil pickup.

Not pretty on the inside, and that is a bunch of plastic and what looks like flaked off paint up inside that pickup.

It did not want to run any oil out of the pickup when I broke the seal on the oil pump, so it was definitely beyond cleaning.

I am going to strain the drained oil to see if there is any metal bits to be worried about, but at least the pump came off easy.

Strained the Beetle's oil, and surprisingly it was almost all plastic. No bearing bits to speak of, so the new pump and the freshly cleaned oil pan went on and she started right up with no oil light or odd noises. Once 12 hours passes and the RTV finishes curing, I will be taking it for a slow country cruise to see if it holds it's pressure at operating temp.

Fingers crossed.
