What did you do to your non-G Body project today [2024 edition]

Lots of cold rain, so back at the 48 SPL. I GOT SPARK!!! Yeah! I double-checked all the electrical stuff- works good. Choke/primer, starter, ignition, trim-n-tilt, it all works. Then I checked the timing. The max advance allowed at WOT was 19° BTDC. It was right on. At idle, it should be -1° ATDC. That was way off, by a lot. I think someone tried bumping up the idle speed by advancing the timing. That works, but is the wrong way to do it. I set that right. I won't be sure of the idle speed until I get it in a barrel to run it. I still need to re-seal the lower unit now that it shifts OK. After I seal it I can install a water pump and button that up for good. Slowly buy surely................................................................................................

I had a 1959 Ranchero, hi-po 289, three speed manual trans. What a POS. It wasn't even old and it was falling apart. Endless headaches.

Fiddled with taillight wiring. Brake cleaner and wire brush seems to have sorted it. For now...

Replaced the parking brake shoes on my F-150. Factory shoes had completely detached from the backing and were squealing like crazy. Was reminded how much i HATE drum brakes in any form. I really appreciate the parking brake design on my Mazda. Instead of the internal drum brake assembly, the cable pull on a lever that actuates the piston instead.

The 1978-81 Trans Am disc brakes used that for the parking brake too. That is why I am using one for my 1968 Firebird project. Our 2012 Jeep Liberty has that drum-in-the-hat set-up. Horrible. One side wore a trench so deep I had to cut the rotor off to service it. Is that a Jeep Cherokee XJ in your avatar? Then you know all about drum brake torture.

I hate to say it, but our G- body tail lights are superior to the design GM used in the 2000's. They went to that bulb with the tiny fine wires that overheat the socket and melt it. I have the tickets to prove it. This is a situation where LED lights are by far the smartest design.

That's why I went with LT1 Fbody rear disc brakes on my SS. No internal shoe.
