By Federal law manufacturers are only required to make parts for a model for 10 years.
I already know that, but still doesn't change the fact I have a greatly easier time getting a part for a 70 year old tractor vs a car less than half that age.
I have never once had an issue with parts being discontinued......and im finishing a frame off resto. Between this forum,
MalibuRacing, ebay, craigslist, facebook groups, and local junkyards there is no reason you can't find what you need. SummitRacing is another great carrier that carries a lot of factory replacement parts. If you can't find something you aren't looking around enough.
And for the dude that said one day the only things available will be the expensive $7k brake swaps......if you can't find a cheaper - under $1k - alternative to that then read my above statement.
In closing, do the homework and LOOK AROUND.
I said at the rate parts are rapidly being discontinued, the only options that will be left in the future will be expensive upgrade kits. Many of the parts I listed before are no longer being made by anybody. Once the supply of NOS or decent used parts dry up, it will be SOL.
Summit or anybody else doesn't carry a replacement air intake hose that I need, guess I will just have to duct tape it and hope it lasts until I can find one in good shape either used or NOS. The charcoal cans are supposed to be replaced every 50,000 miles because the foam breaks down allowing carbon to enter the carb, mine has 87K on it. Sadly nobody makes replacement vapor cans for G bodies, but thankful you can rebuild them using stuff from a pet store, but still a PITA. Guess I could just rip it out, make my car illegal, and allow sludge buildup in my gas tankn with up venting, woohoo.
Had to get used quarter windows from the junkyard because nobody makes new ones, and Regals are rare in junkyards these days, took me half a year to find a pair. In fact G bodies are already a rare sight in my local yards now, can't count on getting parts that way anymore.
But according to your logic, when the fuel mixture solenoid's lean stop adjustment screw stripped on my E4ME Qjet, a $7 kit to fix it to regain the proper fuel mixture dwell isn't needed. I can just run my car pig rich and gas wash my motor, or spend a few hundred bucks on a aftermarket carb that would render my car illega and wate gasl, or search for a matching E4ME that probably needs rebuilding. Was finally able to get the repair kit by calling Tomco directly after searching the net for their phone and parts numbers, and they still had 11 NOS left. (assuming anybody here even knows what the lean stop adjusting screw is, hint: its in your Qjet) When I needed a new AIR diverter management valve, again nobody made or carried them anymore but was lucky to score a NOS one on Ebay for double of what it used to cost. Don't tell me I don't need those parts either, I need them to pass inspection so I can be allowed to drive the damn car on public roads.
Also implying I didn't look around is a lazy strawman argument on your part. I have searched chain stores, ma and pa stores, mail order, the internet, dealerships, online GM part retailers, junkyards, called manufactuers directly in case they still had any NOS sitting around and still can't find many parts I once could easily get 5 years ago. But I will assume your frame off resto, probably includes you ripping everything stock out and using cheap generic parts like a Eddy carb with a catless exhaust and that your car can't pass an smog inspection now if your life depended on it.
Then there is the declining quality of many replacement parts too. Many of the remaining parts still available are sub-standard and give a shorter service life than the originals. Sometimes they are not even near OEM spec (generic spec) and never work right out of the box.
