Almost any synthetic 10W-30 oil that's cheap and not penzoil/valvoline. I wanna try AMS-OIL, but I'm not ready for a $60 oil change, lol.

I'm changing my 83 Hurst Olds Break in Oil. Car has maybe 50 miles on it and some Idle time.
I hear leaving this in too long will gum up the motor?

I'm debating on going my usual 10W30 or 30W Valvoline or most likely Castrol GTX.

Am I better with Synthetic? If so what is best preference? Why not Valvoline Ctty88?

My cars are driven rarely. And should I change yearly even if only a few miles on the car.
These are my drinking ART...

I'm debating on what to put in the 70 W30 also, this car also has probably 50 miles on it.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you...
M

Run Brad Penn or VR1 in the W30 for sure and maybe the Hurst too. They have removed Zinc and Phosphorous out of modern oils due to rollers cams, better oil overall and mainly to increase catalytic convertor affectiveness and life. Being a truck driver, new diesel emissions systems are a nightmare. Constant plugged particulate filters, screwing up DEF etc. I think that is the main reason for it's recent Zinc/Phosphorous decline. I got the last jug of 1421 ppm full synthetic DMO 0W40 from our Co-op. New stuff has 825 ppm synthetic and 1200 ppm dino. I am surprised the original poster had an electronic oil change reminder but flat tappets in the motor. Vehicles started switching to roller cams in the early 80's and nearly all had them by the mid 90's.

Thanks... I have the Brad Penn break in oil in the HO now.
Sounds like you are on top of this stuff, I have no clue anymore, times sure are changing!

I use Castrol GTX high mileage in all my recent rides with no issues / complaints so far. The car seems to smoke a lot less and run much smoother

In the Olds I use Valvoline VR1 20w-50 racing oil but in the daily I use Pennzoil.

I run 15w40 Chevron Delo in my olds & '65 C10. Good stuff & has plenty of zinc. I run havoline in everything else. It's just a matter of preference.

Reason I don't like pens/valvoine is because of all the gunky horrors stories I've heard and seen pics of from years ago. I'm sure their formulas have improved, but id rather just stick with the castrol and Mobil 1 that I've never had bad luck with.

I dont use Castrol anymore because I had sludge in the pan on my 2002 Jeep. Clogged the screen on the oil pump and starved bearings of oil. I caught it soon and was able to fix with new bearings, oil pump/screen. Now I use Penns or valvoline. Whichever is cheaper.
