What would happen with I removed all the emissions crap?

i second and third what the other posters have said on this thread. from everything i understand, the smog pump itself has minimal effect on performance as it's just air pump pumping fresh air into the exhaust.

i recently modified just about everything on my 87 El Camino SS except the computer controlled Q-jet and distributor and ran it for a month or so without the smog pump/AIR/emissions stuff hooked up. i did everything with the intention of keeping it smog legal but there was a delay in figuring out which smog pump i needed with the GMPP serpentine kit i added (the old pump didn't fit so i ran it with the smog delete pulley that came with the kit).

aside from the Check Engine Light being on, the car ran ok but my gas mileage was horrible. it runs quite a bit smoother and the mileage improved after it was all re-connected. it definitely looks cleaner without all those lines and hoses (i have a before and after pic on the "Dual Snorkel on a modified 305" thread over in the El Camino/Caballero section) so if you decide to remove it, take plenty of pics just in case you decide or need to re-install it. when it came time to put it all back together i was lost and had to take it to a couple of places before i found someone i felt confident they knew what they were doing to hook it all back up.

I did not know the color of the interior was a factor. I knew a white T-top 442 from 85 was rare, but I di not know blue added to that made a difference.

I will be leaving it alone. Now I just need to know what kind of problems I should look for.

well, the smog pump itself is a good culprit. they start to squeal when they go bad which i found out when the 91 Camaro smog pump i bought from a salvage yard started making noise right after i installed it. i had already purchased a reman pump and got the salvaged one just for the pulley— was hoping to save some $ and return the reman but no such luck. people were pulling up to me and asking if i had installed a noisy gear drive!

I hear a little squeaking from the accessories not. But I think it is from everyhting being original and th ebelts being old. I wonder if I should look a little closer.

mine sounded like REALLY REALLY bad alternator whine (like in a stereo except from the front of the motor) as it'd rise in volume along with the revs. and it wouldn't happen immediately only after i'd driven a block or two and the car was warmed up. it should give you plenty of warning as it'd just get progressively worse—other than being annoying mine was prolly fine for awhile but since i had a new pump already, i changed it.
