It's like Walmart charging you to build their store

Or in the case of PG&E here in Californ .... to burn it down.

I just continue to struggle with it. For many many years we were told we need to CUT electric use. Remember light bulbs? Now we are told we need to MULTIPLY electric use, many times over, unto endless horizons of ballooning usage. All at the mercy of utilities .... like PG&E?!?

SPOT ON !!

Our ‘needs’ as described by the media/government/business always have a narrative that favors the interests of those in the media/government/business - not necessarily in that order.

“Believe half of what you see and none of what you here.”

Exactly, you guys in some places have brown outs as it is, how will they keep up with millions more electric vehicles? It isn't so bad here with our small population, we can probably keep up with demand once the proper infrastructure is in place. Of course, we can probably start calling EV's Rolling Coal in Saskatchewan. Those Largemouth Bass will stay nice and toasty in Estevan.

Because "they" will start to tell you when you can charge your car. And if you run out of range before your next permitted charge you can't drive.

The idea a car will plot your trip and plan your charge to keep topped off... nice theory. Is EVERY ev going to be wired together in a skynet setup, or, will you get 200 cars planning to charge all at one where there are 5 chargers not knowing everyone is headed there?

Really, it's disappointing where things are and where they've headed. It used to be people came here from behind the iron curtain and were amazed by the variety of goods you could get, how there weren't shortages, how you could start any business you want and make anything you want, same with buying.

Slowly, that has eroded to where special interests are trying to ban small motors, shelves are empty, inflation is rampant, and govt is force dictating changes to what you buy, own, use... even what you think/say has become a target where you're supposed to be woke or adopt certain ideology.. make no mistake about it, all these types of behavior inch closer and closer to soviet era type planned society.

It is pretty sad indeed. The UN has mentioned food prices are at an all time high, up 27% over last year. Retail is basically screwed, they have stuff they say is out of stock, stuff in stock, not there. I went in to pick up a 18 volt Ryobi 600 ft/lbs cordless Impact. I have the 300 ft/lbs version, just enough with the 9 amp batteries. They supposedly had 3, none in stock. Ordered one online and the trouble light Ryobi attachment that was supposedly in stock, couldn't find it either.

I got an email about a pre-order I made three months ago that should be shipping this weekend but might be delayed due to this current stocking issues. Maybe just an excuse to allow them to take there time to ship things.

Now imagine how much more massive the need is in the US.

Utilities here, although regulated, are allowed to include surcharges to cover the costs of the new infrastructure. So you pay for the construction costs up front. Then they sell you the power the plant you had to pay for generates at a markup profit.

It's like Walmart charging you to build their store, then make you pay retail rates for the goods inside. No other industry I know of gets away with that crap.
There are 3 types of utilities in the US:
-Municipalities
-Investor-owned
-Cooperatives

Municipalities (cities and towns) and Investor-owned (PG&E, PSEG, Exelon utilities, etc.) only exist to make money. Municipalities reinvest their revenue back into the area they serve (public works, roads, parks, anything). Investor-owned utilities only want to maximize profit taken home at the end of the day.

Cooperatives are member-owned, i.e. everyone who is a customer is a part-owner. They are not-for-profit and typically refund all surplus revenue to the customers once per year via billing credit, check in the mail, etc. This is usually on the order of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars.

Sadly, investor-owned utilities serve roughly 3/4 of people in the US, while municipalities and Cooperatives about equally serve the remaining 1/4 of the population.

Just wanted to make a point that not all utilities are greedy - only most of them haha
