Another option if you want the stealthy look of the factory cassette player is to add an MP3 jack to the stock radio. I did this to my stock radio and it works awesome. 8)

I guess I am not following, is there an add-on that allows that, or do you have pull the radio and have it professionally installed? I was a professional installer back in 88-90 but a LOT has changed since then. I have totally lost track of what's available for factory stuff.

I bought a kit to do it. You have to pull the radio and splice into the amp wires running from the amp to the cassette deck.

Then you can either drill your faceplate on the radio and install the input lead there or in my case, I just have it coming out of the back of the radio and through my center console to where the ashtray used to be.

You can still use the tape deck but if you plug an iPod or other MP3 player into the aux port, it will cut out the tape deck and automatically let the MP3 jack have control.

I know there are quite a few guys selling radios like this already done on Ebay but it's tough to find an Oldsmobile specific radio. Most are Chevy's, Pontiac's, etc. So for $40 and maybe a half hour of my time I just modified my own.

All great info guys. I will do some more looking and see what I can find and decide whether I want to modify mine for a MP3 input or what. I appreciate the information. 🙂

hey can you post a link to one of those kits to retro fit an aux imput into one of these old radios

right now i put in a pioneer single din and really am interested in going back toward the stock look with one of the 1 1/2 din styles ones maybe with the cd player. can i expect to get good crisp sound out of doing the aux imput kit?

also anybody have a dark woodgrain bezel for the 1 1/2 din radio in good shape?

Red, I might have a source out of Canada for one. I ordered mine like a month ago and a week or so he realized he swapped addresses. I got someone else's package and they got mine. He said he had one more. It is supposedly in the dark woodgrain pattern also like the one I got for my '83 H/O.

Hey Andrew is the Mp3 player jack kind of the same like the USB port or is it totally different cause it would be great for me if I could use that because then I could us my cell phone to listen to my music.

No, it only accepts a typical 3.5mm headphone style jack. Although all you would need with your phone would be an adpater cord that would plug into the stereo MP3 jack and then into your phone.
