Alright, here comes $0.02 from the rookie.
Part 1 - Availability
small block chevys are like *ssh*les. everyone's got one, and most of them work just fine. lol
i think it's because there are just so many more places to get the parts "new", which is where the price comes in.
if more people made buick/olds/pontiac parts i'm sure you'd see more of them in cars.
Timmy walks into the speed shop:
"Gee mister, i sure would like to buy this Rocket 350 from you, but it sure is expensive.."
shop owner: "Well where else you gonna get it kid? (mwahahaha)"
Timmy goes home with a small block chevy.
In a perfect world, Oldsmobile and Pontiac would still be around and a 455 from either company would cost the same as a 454.
Part 2 - Use what you like
If i had come across the white 84 Monte Carlo SS of my dreams, then i would be sticking up for the chevys, but then my regal came along with its Olds 307 (the engine brand/body brand dilemma that no one talks about lol). Although sexy as hell, it is equally slow and gets smoked by my brother's 5.0 Sprint on a daily basis. my first thought was: "well it looks like its tree-fity time", but i soon found out that i just have a thing for Oldsmobiles, so now i can't get the idea of a bigger Olds engine for my Buick out of my head. it would be cool to have a buick v8 in there, but i love my olds motor for what it is, and i know there are plenty of small block chevy guys who think the same thing about their own engines.
Part 3 - "Always in moderation."
This whole deal i just like our good friend, the '69 Camaro.
The '69 Camaro is a bad-*ss car, but when you just keep seeing them, over and over and over, they really lose appeal.
alright, i'm done.. lol
