"For sale 1 1983 Gm 700R4 automatic transmission with tourqe converter. This 700R4 does not a computer operated transmission. This one has a passing gear kick down cable and has hydraulic overdrive."

I'm thinking it's possible in the early 1983-1986 chevy trucks. They used it and didn't have a computer.

However, I'd pass for a different reason than all of the above. The early 700s were inferior to the later 700s in strength and reliability due to a couple redesign changes. Most notably, early ones had a 27 spline shaft, while later had a 30 spline... I think 1984 was the break point.

As mentioned above some of the pickups had that transmission. My old 84 used a vacuum switch to lock up the torque convertor. Don't remember how it worked though.

$220 I would need more information. The older 700R4s are the ones you want (No computer needed), But need to be rebuilt and upgraded to cure the problems the older ones have. My 700R4 core is from a 1984 Camaro rebuilt and upgraded. as for the Torque converter lock-up Mine is built to lock-up in fourth gear only. I have a toggle switch to unlock the converter if I want\need to (like Racing).

Those before 1987 had the weaker input shaft and pump. Not sure if the cases were the same, but they still used an electric lockup solenoid. Electrons from a vacuum switch taste like electrons from a computer to a solenoid.
