Yet another posi question

If he is willing to ship it if there is a Greyhound terminal close to him and you try shipping it by the bus, I got a roller cam and the set up shipped from Vancouver to Kitchener by Greyhound and it cost me I think under $30.

That's one of my favorite posi carriers, simple in design it can be rebuilt and it can take a beating. For that price grab it there getting harder to find.

That’s the plan. He hasn’t listed an actual contact number, so I’m stuck with messaging him through the website, and he hasn’t been very timely in responding to my messages. The only info on it I’ve been able to get from him so far is that he’s been sitting on it for “20-25 years” as a spare after pulling it from a low mile Camaro.
I’ve inquired if he’d be willing to put it on the bus and haven’t heard anything back in 4 hours.... So I guess we’ll see.

Thanks for the input. That’s very reassuring to hear. I’m trying my damndest to make it happen, just waiting on him!

Hope you get it, good luck.

Just a quick update to this thread:

The deal was struck today with the seller, and he agreed to ship it the 3 hours south to me by putting it on a Greyhound bus.
I felt his asking price at $150 was fair and reasonable so I didn’t attempt to talk him down any, especially since he was kind enough to ship it to me. The cost of shipping & insurance on it was less than $50 (I would have spent more than that in fuel to get it myself anyways), and is payable when I go to pick it up.

It should be here and ready for pickup tomorrow, so if it is I’ll post up my findings with it and a couple pics.

Thanks to those whose advice and recommendations were given, it looks like Olds Cool will be leaving twin J hooks on the pavement this year!

Much appreciated all,
D.

Took delivery of the posi today, it was exactly as advertised and in great condition. Spider gears and clutch packs look great, it doesn’t look to have ever been abused and the internals aren’t rusty. Just a tiny bit of flash rust on the cast housing.

I’m going to replace the carrier bearings just as a precaution, it’s cheap insurance and now would be the time to do it.
My coworkers reminded me to run the posi additive in the oil, does anyone have any recommendations on additives?
Is any one particular brand better to use than another? On my 12 bolt in The Juggernaut I recall using the GM specific additive.

Also, one of them brought up an interesting point, when he was working as a Ford tech they were required to soak the clutches for a minimum of 4 hours before installing. Because this is already all assembled, can I get away with just submerging the entire carrier in gear oil and additive to get the clutches “soaked” before installing it in the housing?
Will this provide enough for the clutches to get saturated?

Thanks again in advance for any insight guys. I’m already a happy camper.
🙂

No specific brand preference on the additive. There are some gear oils that are advertised as being for limited slip but they still need additive, at least that's my experience.
Since that unit has already been run, you shouldn't need to soak it. Replacing the bearings is wise.
Glad this all worked out. I'm sure you'll keep us posted.

Thanks Driven.
I agree on using the additive in addition to the gear oils that claim to have it in it already, there’s horror stories and complaints on the web about it not working as advertised when the additive isn’t used.

This carrier was the previous owners “spare” as he called it and was in storage for approximately 20 years as he recalls, so I would think the clutches would all be dried out by now. Also the carrier doesn’t have any odour of gear oil so I’m pretty sure it’s bone dry right now. That’s why I wanna make sure the clutches are soaked if they need to be.

Spider gears look good and the S spring looks new. You stole it for that price. You should rebuild the rest of the rear.
