Your car *WILL* get stolen!

The cops around here even advise people to hide the vin # that's visible from the front window. I have my authorization number to search licence plates but anyone in Ontario for $12 can search a plate number....with the vin #, year and make of the vehicle I can get a package that gives me the current owner and the complete history of the car for $20...and easier than that I have a pi whose a client that I have hired on occasion and I don't even ask where he gets his info from

That's ****ed up, talk about an invasion of privacy. Good thing I don't live in Canada.
Why on earth would that information need to be accessable by the public?

Obstructing your VIN is definately a good idea. I use a simple business card to cover mine.
I know of several people with newer cars (mainly '94-'96 B-bodies) that had their cars stolen.
When they were recovered, they got the cars back, in various states of condition, along with a brand new set of keys.
The thiefs had run the VIN and ordered new keys for the car through a dealer, and simply hopped in and drove away.

Luckily stuff like that for G-bodies isn't on record like it is with newer cars.

It was done with good intent and called the "Used Vehicle Package". Similar to Carfax it will show the list of previous owners of the vehicle ( including bodyshops and dealers ) so you can background check the car.

Regarding Insurance in Ontario for classic cars, check with Lant Insurance. They are based out of Stouffville and offer classic car insurance. Same as other companies the car needs to appraised by one of their reps before insuring the vahicle.

If the dealers actually did their job correctly that would not happen :blam: . People think I'm a dick when I ask them for their drivers license and proof of ownership of the vehicle before cutting keys for them, but oh well, I'd rather be a ******* for checking than be at fault for a car theft.

spent is a better word...an investment implies a higher return on the amount you invested and I think most of you will agree we will never get the money back that we have put into these cars....but we are guys so we do it anyway...lol

@axisg, thanks bro, I will check out Lant Insurance in Stouffville.

@sammycage, Dude, you really are a n00b. You quoted my whole multi-post only to ask about my "$150k invested" -- did you even look at my sig? It's all in my sig and there's a link there to my cardomain page as well.

Over $150K. invested? Any pictures of your Barrett Jackson car?
:wtf: On second thought, don't look at my sig. You can stick to your sarcasm, and then, you can go shove it up your *ss.

454....you have to admit $153,000+++ into a g body is kind of excessive. Let us know what the appraiser values your car at when you get it done.

Sure -- I do admit that. There is also a long history behind it as well. It's not excessive when someone wants to put a BMW V12 engine into a G-body? But for a n00b like sammycage to come here and use the rofl smiley at my expense is nothing less than shooting off at the mouth.

Hey buickestate, you're in Ontario (I think?). Can you recommend an insurance company for my 84 Grand Prix? I will have the appraisal value at over $150,000. I'm interested and hoping you are right about that ^^^.

You check out silver wheels at http://www.lant-ins.ca/index.php

there is also ING insurance they have a classic and special interest agreed value policies, that's who I'm with. I had been with Lant in the past, but ING is about 10% less for the same coverage and have less restrictions.

The premiums are based on the appraised value meaning the higher the value of the vehicle the higher your premium will be. But it is full coververage.

they will need a proper appraisal done by a professional classic and special interest automotive appraiser. In most cases, the appraisals done for your MTO forms are not sufficient for classic and special interest vehicle insurance. If you want full value make sure you provide them with all your receipts, the appraiser should spend about and hour minimum inspecting and going through your car taking pictures of it, and listings your mods. When the appraiser is done inspecting your vehicle he will then spend a few days doing research on your vehicle to establish what similar vehicles with similar mods and condition are worth. They should take into account that you've gone a few steps beyound most. the appraiser will also take into account your time and extras that you've invested in your car. At some point before the appraiser is done his full report and writes up the appraisal they should contact you and negociate the actual figure that will be marked down on your appraisal. The fees for the appraisal should run between $150-$300 Canadian Not all appraisers are the same, ask questions. The guy that has done mine in the past is a Gbody guy and knows them inside out, he is out of Lucan Ontario and will travel, PM me if you want his information.

My word of advice don't tell the appraiser that your car is worth 150 grand, show them that it's worth 150, show them your reciepts, impress them with the custom mods, impress them with your audio system, impress them with the overall condition of the car, detail your car to the nines, have all your receipts and service records in a file folder and not a shoe box. let the appraiser come to the realisation that you've spent over 150 grand on your car.

There is a full spectrum Gbodies and Gbody owners on this forum. Some here own $500 rust buckets that use more oil than gas as a daily driver. Some here have full out dragg cars. Some here have some nice clean daily drivers. Some have some nice clean low mile show room condition cruise night cars. Some have full out customs.

We are all here for various reason. That's what makes furums like these great. We all have cool ideas to share, neat mods.
The main reasons some come is to find ways to improve their cars. To find like minded people to share thoughts and Ideas with. We are all working within our own budgets and realities. forums are a level field. Its a place were some can unload some old parts, and other can find needed parts.

This thread is about what we can do reduce the chances of our cars being the target of theft, and how each of us deals with that. I can see where a young member of the forum with an old tired G body that they like/love can be left in disbelief by the fact that a fellow forum member can drop a custom crate engine that worth more than a year's wages to some people into their cars. Some of the cars on this forum have paint and body work that is worth in the thousands and others have $30 rattle can sepcial. We are on the same forum and all of our advice and ideas are on the same level. We are not all playing in the same league, but that's what makes these forums special. We can't possibly all agree with each other, and if we did we would all have the same g body and all be looking for the same part.

People be a bit more open minded and tolerant.

To stay on topic the more we can do to prevent our cars from being stolen, and the more prepared we are with insurance the better we can sleep no matter what level you are at.

I get threatened that my car is going to be stolen every time I take my car to the track where I crew on a super stock...the threat is they are going to stick some numbers and hoosiers on it and go racing with it....
