I have a Ford 9" in mine with the huge drum brakes,

Factory Monte SS dual brake booster/master.

I did replace the proportioning valve with a factory GM brass disk/drum.

Never needed anything more for it to work as needed.

Did you install a Disc/Disc proportioning valve?

I may have missed it, but does the stock gbody driveshaft work with this? Or did you need to shorten it?

I'm not familiar with the gm gov lock rear....why is it inferior to a gm posi unit?

What would the ideal backspace be for a 15x8 wheel?....somewhere around 5.5 or 6"?

I shortened the 2004r driveshaft 4" or so for the t56. I cut it like 1/2" short for what it should have been so not it is like 1/2" long. It works OK but too small for my power level.

The gov lock isnt a true posi. It doesn't have clutches or cones like normal ones, it has a govenor weight that flings out under speed. It won't lock until it the rear senses difference in speed between both sides. Usually they blow up because it just throws a lock pin once it's already spinning.

Yes, a 15x8 wheel could use a 6" ideally. 5.5" should work I think. I have to test though. The more the better. The c5 wheels are 17x8.5 with 7" BS or so.

Great Idea! And I like that you can still bolt it in using factory control arms and get to retain the factory rear sway bar.
The only downside with any rear wider than stock is not being able to use the current wheels you might already really like and having to change them.

So would a driveshaft from a gbody equipped with an 8.5 (gn or 442) be the correct length? Assuming I keep the 200r4 and replace the factory 7.5 with the zr2 8.5"

What's the cheapest/easiest way to replace the gov lock with a conventional posi?

I did some work an a mini-rubbed Malibu, it had a similar bracket, albeit, much more simple, to mount a Dana 60 under it.

I wonder if that guy and car is still around..?

Be advised this would in now way be considered a cheap swap, you have to have a car Dana 60 to start with. Or a Dana 60 cut down with aftermarket axles and brakes.
