anyone make their own transmission cross member? I am seasoned in the fab and welding department and making one won't be an issue but I wanted some ideas as I am so friggin indecisive that what she take me a day, will take 2 months because I am the type, if I don't like the way it looks, I start over. Fatal flaw. I am a bit of a perfectionist but I'm learning.

Mike,
I recall seeing past threads where guys actually made their own cross members using a jig made from the original cross member, yet deviating the design more to their purpose...clearance for dual exhaust, type of trans, etc.
Being a proficient fabricator, this aught to be a piece o' cake for you...;)

What type of car and transmission do you have currently? According to your Avatar, I'm guessing you have a Malibu.

Maybe just mimic the G force or Iceman crossmember?

Jared,
I agree, you can't go wrong using a proven design like the G-Force or Iceman cross member.

For what trans?

I was looking at both. That's what I was shooting for. But, I also wanted to see what others on here have come up with. I built one for my last car from 1/8" plate that I boxed in completely and made openings for the exhaust. It took forever. Don't want to do that again. And I didn't think the trans mattered as I would modify any design to fit my particular needs.

You are correct, 79' silver Mullet! Th350. I have a whole winter to make it and want some ideas. I like the iceman but I would probably build something similar out of 1", 40 schedule, box steel.

Here's my homemade unit. I also made a brace that goes from the driver side rail to the gusset on the driver side of the add on piece of the crossmember. I'ts held up to 500 whp so far. I plan to remove it and check it over the winter.

Thanks for sharing. I am building one in my head right now. I miss the days when the junk yard was full of this stuff!!!
