Take some 1/2" plate steel. Weld up some quick brackets. Find an old railroad rail or two. Weld them together on front and back.

With those as your bumpers I don't see it much mattering what the traffic around you wants, let them bounce off like a tin can.

Drove my heavy half to the scrap yard after a helper loaded it up with damaged sheet metal. My puny half ton with the I6 tipped ye scales dry but with me in it just a handful of pounds shy of 5000 pounds, probably could make that up by topping off the gas... Your 1 ton crew should easily be much more than that....

ZF5 is a 5 speed manual trans.

Any trans change will require crossmember and driveshaft changes so they will be spendy. A carbed 5.3 could be in and running for around 2k.

None of these are cheap options. If you smoked that small block then you'll be in it that much to replace it but it just bolts in real nice like.
Unless he is on the interstate constantly, why would he put a 5.3 which have no bottom end torque in a big heavy truck? An Olds 350, 403 or 455 with a 4L80E and adapter plate will get out of it's own way off the line. I would say a gear swap to 3.55 or 3.42's but a 4x4 makes that much harder.

The motor is back together and seams to run ok I'll see how it goes this week. Still no oil pressure gauge I found and fixed more hacked wires under the hood but nothing seamed to change
