He tries.

So my oldest had a school assignment that involved levers, pulleys, axles, wheels and such. The project required building a "simple machine" using some of those elements. I asked Tatiana what she knew of that met the criteria - she settled on a tank.

I had her sketch it up, and we got to work.

She'd planned for a tub and turret made of wood. I told her to GTFO and we'd be using steel.

Long story short we used most of the elements to come up with a satisfying result. Using some previous skills, and some new ones... like welding.

Better than me.

Not quite 8, the size of a 10 year old, with the intellect of a teenager.

She looks hilarious in the welding getup! Half the size of what you'd expect. So were her welds better than yours? :ROFLMAO:

ck80, check me on this. A kid given an assignment like hers where you live could get suspended from school for what they choose to make and submit??? Is that just like in your state or is it a national reaction? Right now I am having a very hard time understanding why someone who would actually put in the effort and do a good job would be punished for it while and bunch of slackers and pc's would get automatic gold stars. That's just plain wrong, thinks me.

For that black powder percussion cap, it would be simple enough to gun drill the barrel on a lathe and then create some kind of hinged cap with a simple latch to hold it in place at one end to act as a breech block, after that well...... cut the pointy end off a push pin and use the body as an instant plastic projectile, maybe....? (Did I just weaponize a child's school project???) Don't think that would go over too well, particularly in the federal capital of Canada, RCMP all over the place and horse s*** on your lawn (LOL)
Or you could rig it to a butane lighter and have a flame thrower for guests who need a light for their cancer stick but are sitting across the room; or even as fire starter for your torches. (Time for me to rack out before the ideas start to become truly weird.)

Yes.

relatively few exceptions to it being national

I agree. Problem is, and leaving aside opinion to prevent politiks crossover except to say I think it's stupid, anything that reflects anything that goes bang is considered zero tolerance.

It is so extreme that there was a kid who had a toy in the room behind him unused during a zoom meeting for virtual learning. A PC parent complained, the elementary student was expelled, and school board upheld after video review.

So yes. It is an irrational hot button issue this side of the border.

Meanwhile, back in my day, I remember being in 8th grade and wearing a coat I'd had on at the range last time I wore it. At lunch I found a mostly full 100rd plastic sleeve of .22lr. Gun safety being a learned thing since shooting my .20ga in elementary school I turned them in at the office to prevent anything potentially happening.

No suspension. Certainly no expulsion. Times have changed.

No art projects showing anything boom. No toys. Not even a water gun. Pure craziness. But thats the way these days. Pendulum swings, then overreacts the other way, and vice versa until nothing makes sense

After my Grand Cherokee had been getting harder and harder to start in the cold. I finally bit the bullet and bought a newer one.

Enter my new '06 Grand Cherokee Overland edition.

It has the 5.7 and that thing flat hauls. It gets gas economy that would make Captain Planet cry, but should be able to tow my car trailer without much issue.

Was hoping to get the front lighting done on Friday, but I was little afraid to pull the trigger on my new plan so gonna wait and think about it some more. I originally was going to put most of the Jeep hardware behind the core support and just make a plate to cover up what you would see up front. After looking at it another way I think it will look fine if I mount it all up front and make it more secure that way. Just have to drill holes to mount it which is why I am getting gun shy.e
But after messing with that I moved on to making the fog lights I got fit into the OEM mount which went pretty quick, then after that made a second DRL/turn signal mount that I like much better but is a ton smaller than the other side. Since I was almost out of metal it had to be small to make it, now I will just have to burn in a couple of pieces for it to mount into stock locations. Then I think I am going to go back and modify the first one I made to look more like the second, ended up giving up before getting to mount the Chevy emblem on the Sonoma grill but think that should go pretty smoothly.

My sister bought one of those trucks new. At the time it was "power trains warranty for life"... then, she being... well, herself with her "fancy" Boston ways, foolishly traded it in for about $3k against a new envoy with it cracked just over 100k miles. Never was in the shop, and only wear item was some drivers seat leather. Dumb move on her part

Ah, if your new ride is an '06, then what was the production year for the old one?

Up here things are kind of weird for used cars due to, 1. rust and corrosion, and 2. parts. A five year old car is considered obsolescent because 5 years is about the amount of time a mfgr runs a model before redesigning it. At 10 years it is obsolete and worth nothing as a trade in. (Better just scrap that POS, buddy) Also, after that five years, OEM parts for that vehicle start to become unavailable or only by special order. I've had this talk with my local salvage yard rep and he only keeps vehicles from 0-5 years of age in stock for picking. Older than 5, it depends on ongoing demand or uniqueness, and after 10, what comes in gets immediately stripped of the basics and then stacked for transport to the shredder. Often, about all that comes out are the battery and the gas tank for safety and off the metal munchers it goes. Trucks fare a lot better. They tend to last longer and get repaired more frequently. Still have the same issue with parts availability and the aftermarket seems to be slower when it comes to picking up the slack. Tried Rock Auto, who advertises they have "everything" a car will ever need, and "Oh No, they didn't."

The last time an S-10 came into the yard as a DOA, the only things left from it by the time I was done were the frame, motor and t-mission, and the cab shell. Took the one good front fender, hood, both doors, the complete rear end minus the springs, the rear stabilizer assembly with clamps, end links, and frame mounts and some misc stuff. It was all in good shape and apart from the hood and the diff it all went up in the loft on the mezzanine floor for cold storage. The hood is outside until I can jigger some room for it and the rear end is sitting on my rack for such things along with a couple of others.

Last G-Body that came through was a mid' 80's more door Pontiac in absolutely great shape. Think it must have been sold by someone's estate. Almost a shame to see it there but, no room. Did score the spare wheel because it was one of those micro-spares and they are hard to come by because the body shops use them for car movers. The yard likes to keep them because full size wheels get parted out or sold intact. Has to be at least 5 years ago if not more. Love to be able to take a trailer and make a banzai run down to the desert states to pick some of the yards. Never know what can be found.

There was that case of a kid being suspended from school because he chewed his pop tart into a shape of a gun. The school fought tooth and nail to uphold it too.
