12,500 mile oil life??? shut the front door!!!

Have ya'll seen this stuff at the store yet from the Mobile 1 folks? It says that the oil is good for an entire year... I know how I drive probably isn't test subject worthy 😎, but even under the best circumstances I wouldn't trust this stuff for a year in my lawnmower... I'm a twice a year/every 3k miles (5k with synthetic) kind of guy, and that's just so I can sleep at night.

Obviously they weren't expecting the typical consumer to try and set land speed records for half tons on the freeway or to compete with other rwd traffic for burnout lengths through the Walmart parking lot... These are just hypotheticals 😀

but I digress... do we trust the oracles on this one?

The deal with oil is it does not break down. It gets contaminated with fuel, condensation, soot and minute amounts of coolant. Semis go 25k+ miles on an oil change because they almost never stop. Oil life and quality depend upon driving habits. Short trip, coolant temp as too cool does not allow condensation to boil out, proper crankcase breathing. Proper filtering. There is a difference in filters. Choke settings. To rich puts more fuel in oil. Engine condition and a multitude of other things. I like synthetic oil and with my habits I am good with 5 to 7k miles to a change. The right conditions it may be ok to go that long. I think it is an exception rather than a rule though. I like Mobil 1 and had the opportunity to talk to one of their engineers a few years back on oil. Very impressive and that's why I use Mobil 1

Long duration oil change intervals are by products of modern computer controlled engine management and more precise machining. The oil may be a little different, but your engine isn't.

The technology that went into the new oils also went into the new engines.

I'd go by the rules established by the guys that manufactured your engine.

We have lease semi's at work and I about passed out when they said they do 40,000 mile oil changes.
That mostly metro driving and a lot of dusty job sites. Crazy!!!

If i was to use it i would put a double filter kit on what ever I was using it in.

I recall that Amsoil used to offer a bypass filter kit - you put a roll of TP in the housing and it scrubbed the dirt out of your oil for 10,000 miles.
