Re: 1987 Olds Pro-touring project build *LONG*

Haven't had a whole lot to post on the car as I haven't done much to it. LOL

Cleaned the barn out over the long weekend and at least have the car running well enough now with the EFI that I can start it and move it when I want.

Note to self....when tuning EFI, it doesn't matter what cranking pulse widths you burn to the ECM to try and get it to start properly if you don't have FUEL in the fuel tank! DOH! 😳

However I do need to go around and retorque all of my head studs. I have a water leak coming from somewhere and I'm afraid it might be leaking from the drivers side head. It's only happening when the engine gets warm and the pressure in the system increases. I get a small puddle under the drivers side of the block below the power steering. It's also typically wet on the frame brace running from the engine crossmember to the frame horn on that side.

It's an odd place to have a leak so I can only guess its coming from the head. I'm just hoping that retorquing the head studs does the trick and it's not an issue with my Cometic head gaskets. 🙁

I did get the doors back on the car after their first few coats of primer. But I still have plenty of sanding to do. These darn things are still a bit wavy where I shaved the locks. But at least now I can start aligning all of the panels and spreading bodyfiller over the seams to get them perfectly straight.

Of course some of the best news is that my HVAC controller that I sent out to Hot Rod Air over 14 months ago is finally finished and being shipped back! That was a crazy fiasco but I'm glad to finally be getting it back. I have one of their aftermarket evaporators in my car and instead of using the aftermarket knobs and such that don't look right in the car, I sent them a brand new stock HVAC controller unit so it could be modified to work their evaporator.
So it should still look and function like it did originally, only now it controls the aftermarket evaporator instead.

Shyt bro I hope your water leak issue gets solved. It may be the head gasket but perhaps it could also be the freeze plugs on the underside of the block?

I don't think it's the freeze plugs. Those are all along the side of the block but I have what looks like water stains on the front of the head, PS pump, etc. The odd part is that the stains look as though they've been thrown by the belts or the electric fans and not just dribbled down the block.

sounds like the front bearing seal of the pump is leaking and running down the blades but that leak wouldn't only happen when the pressure builds. Have you removed the belt you can check to see if there is any play and if there is any binding when your turning it?

That's something else that I thought. Maybe a sealing issue with the water pump or a bad pump. Hate for it to be a bad pump since it's a brand new Flowkooler. 🙁 However I'd rather it be a bad water pump than a bad head gasket!

Hopefully I'll have time to do some digging and checking this weekend to see whats up. I've been wanting to change my 180* thermostat to a 160* anyway.

Re: 1987 Olds Pro-touring project build *LONG*

Well, after spending some time aligning body panels today I decided to start the engine and let it warm up so I could try to trace down this leak.

I didn't want to spend the time pulling valve covers, pulley's etc. before I at least figured out where it looks like its coming from.

The good news is that it doesn't appear to be a head gasket. Even though there are signs of water leakage on that side of the block, it's not fresh coolant. Looks more like it was sprayed there from somewhere else.

I had a couple of my heater hose connections that were seeping a little coolant so I tightened them up but I don't think that was the real problem.

I essentially have coolant on the lower power steering pump bracket, front F41 frame brace (drivers side) as well as some coolant right at the oil pan/timing cover lip seal.

The water pump snout and pulley are completely dry so I'm thinking it may be a bad water pump gasket.

Not really in the mood to fix that right now. lol But at least I know it's not a head gasket.

glad it's not the head gasket.....maybe you can get a pump rental from your local parts retailer to pressurize the system so you can test the system out for leaks...

Tooks a few pictures today after getting the doors back on the car. Passenger side door is pretty close to where it needs to be but the drivers side is a mess. So I only took pics of the passenger side. lol

Still need to align the fenders and such.

Love seeing the updates on this build. Everytime I see your progress pics I drool -- car is always lookin' sick even though there's much to do still, especially with those wheels/tires on the back (which I hope you keep)!!!
