Theres a good possibility your missing intake bolt was a serious vacuum leak causing your power issue.
I also agree that the missing bolt could cause a noticeable vacuum leak

Clogged cat - and that would be one seriously clogged cat

i think that might be it its the stock cat from 87 :?

I'm bettin' on the cat.
The rotted off piece your picture above shows, is/was the check valve for the A.I.R. system (air pump) - no power related issue there

Dude take take your cat out, punch the honey comb out of it and put it back in.

X2 on that last one but if it dosent fix it you may have a bad cam gear (neoprene overlay on the gear) your best bet would be to check it with a vacuum gauge if all else fails :blam: CRATE 454!!!!!!!

Are the RPMs actually going up or are you just having to put your foot into it more? Its not physically possible for the RPMs to in the motor to need to go higher to achieve a certain speed unless either your torque converter or trans is slipping.

It is however very possible that its taking way more pedal to get your car moving and if its struggling it will definitely feel as though the rpms are higher, but they arent.

What your describing is really sounding like a vacuum leak to me. To give you a short story: I had an 87 monte. I put a mechanical carb and dizzy and stripped EVERYTHING off the motor. Well when I went to take the intake bolt off to yank the cruise control solenoid that **** snapped. Never payed much attention to it because at the time I was living with my parents and they were on a stop tearing into everything you own and working on cars here kick.

Well I buttoned the car up. Set the timing and it was the strongest running 305 I'd ever driven in. The thing would pull like a ****. So I drove it like that for about a week and was really happy with the $50 carb and $120 dizzy and what a difference it made. Then one cold morning I got in the car and started her up. All of the sudden the car ran like absolute *ss. At idle-20% throttle it would run fine. As soon as you gave it some good gas the leak around the intake bolt would appear and the car would fall on its face.

Now at first I figured "Ah ha clogged cat!". Took em out, punched em through same thing.... The moral of the story is it took a lot of novice mechanic head scratching for me to realize that the car had an intermittent vacuum leak. It was very frustrating. So now that my story that turned out to not be so sort is done my primary advise to you is replace the intake manifold gaskets. It an afternoon and literally like $20-$30 worth of parts.
