7.5 to an 8.5 or any direct posi rear

Very good info

I find there is not enough meat on the two pinion gears in a 7.5 or 7.625 posi. I blew the two pinion gears in my posi without too much of a problem. The two pinion gears in an open 7.5 have alot more meat on them. The Truetrack has no spider gears or clutch packs or cones

Quick Performance 9 inch housing and axle kits start at $745.

I think I gave $900 for my Moser housing and axles with a rear disc brake kit. I had them put longer adjustable lower control arm mounts and build/weld it up with 4* down pinion angle (for drag racing). I am using a used 9 inch 4.10 center chunk($150) from a truck and I added a 31 spline dirt track spool($100) and fresh bearings ($100).

I built a 7.5 for a bracket race drag car Malibu that got street duty as well, it got a used Camaro posi carrier, Moser 28 spline axles and a stock rear cover. It went 11.70s for a few years of hard drag race abuse with slicks. It lived through 10.70 passes on nitrous with the wheels up. It got upgraded due to NHRA safety rules for the c-clips.

Here is a video that walks you thru cutting down a 9 inch. Bear with it, it's worth it. There is a lot of intel.

That is the $600 housing a few hours north of me.

I also think trying to save money by using a rear end that is wider than stock and then having to buy special parts to make it "bolt in" plus adding in the cost of a new set of rims because now the rears need to run a high backspace which in 15" really limits you to mostly race style wheels which have a limited selection and typically cost more so consider these expenses over going with something like a bolt in 9" especially if you are fond of your current rims.

Well you have gotten a lot of good advice, seeing your on a limited budget you might just leave that 7.5 in there and save some $$ and keep your eyes open for a deal(nothing to lose). You might look at an A-body rear but after going through all this I would move towards the 9 in direct bolt in. As bar 50 said housing and axle packages start about $750 - you can have it made with GM ends and you can get a 9 in pig from $50-$75 up depending on what you want.

If you do end up looking for an A body rear don't overlook the 8.2" 10 bolt. They are good for up to 500 hp and will cost you about 1/2 of what a 12 bolt will cost. I got my 8.2" with an Eaton posi for $600 and I'm in Canada....
