7.5 to an 8.5 or any direct posi rear

Well you have gotten a lot of good advice, seeing your on a limited budget you might just leave that 7.5 in there and save some $$ and keep your eyes open for a deal(nothing to lose). You might look at an A-body rear but after going through all this I would move towards the 9 in direct bolt in. As bar 50 said housing and axle packages start about $750 - you can have it made with GM ends and you can get a 9 in pig from $50-$75 up depending on what you want.
Make sense...May have to make them Ford guys happy

If you do end up looking for an A body rear don't overlook the 8.2" 10 bolt. They are good for up to 500 hp and will cost you about 1/2 of what a 12 bolt will cost. I got my 8.2" with an Eaton posi for $600 and I'm in Canada....

But, you still have to buy adapter upper arms/kit and, again with funny offset rear wheels.

8.2 10 bolt, 8.5 10 bolt, and 12 bolt all have 28 spline axles...even the early 8.8 Ford has 28 spline axles. The closest to G-body size 8.2 is the 64-67 Chevelle... They are considered muscle car parts around here, harder to come by than a G-body 8.5 or at least close in price...plu, none of the ones I have came even near had a good gear ratio or posi for less than $750.

by the time you buy everything to make something fit and strong enough to hold up you will have more invested than just buying a Strange S60, doing it right means doing it once.

How much difference would it make if one were to be doing air ride, and therefore modifying any axle used? I'm thinking Explorer 8.8", with disc brakes. New wheels are already in the plan, anyway.

I have the 64 - 67 version, UMI conversion uppers and UMI lowers with a Roto Joint at the axle end which was needed due to the lower bracket on the axle tube was closer to the center of the rear than the bracket on the G body rear even though the 8.2" is 2.5" wider than the G body rear. UMI did the modification on the lower to install the Roto Joint and only chaged me the difference of the cost of the Roto Joint. I was lucky that the 8.2" rear I bought had the 3.08 gears I wanted but it took me a year to find a 64 - 67 8.2" rear cause they are very rare and lucky for me most overlook them in search of a 12 bolt.

Quick Performance 9 inch housing and axle kits start at $745.

I think I gave $900 for my Moser housing and axles with a rear disc brake kit. I had them put longer adjustable lower control arm mounts and build/weld it up with 4* down pinion angle (for drag racing). I am using a used 9 inch 4.10 center chunk($150) from a truck and I added a 31 spline dirt track spool($100) and fresh bearings ($100).
Wow I was looking at that earlier...you guys are really up on it... Most definitely will stay on here for more knowledge

Hey G-Body fellowmen would any one know weather all 200 r4 trannies are the same? I want one for my Buick 455 and a guy says he has one that came out a Monte Carlo.
